Cushing leads Brewer past Vikes, to final

SOUTH PARIS – Corey Cushing spun a two-hitter to lead the No. 3 Brewer Witches to a 4-2 Eastern Maine Class A semifinal baseball victory over the No. 2 Oxford Hills Vikings Saturday.

The Witches advanced to Tuesday’s 7 p.m. Eastern Maine title game against the No. 1 Mount Ararat Eagles of Topsham at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

The Witches may face Mount Ararat senior standout pitcher Mark Rogers, who was recently named the national Gatorade Player of the Year.

In Saturday’s game, Brewer’s Cushing struck out eight and walked only two.

Brewer coach Dave Morris said that Cushing’s pitching was the key.

“He pitched one heck of a game. It showed a lot of guts for a sophomore pitcher to go to their field and pitch the way he did,” said Morris.

Matt Grimes had two singles and an RBI for the Witches and J.T. Davis singled twice. Andy Otis hit a run-scoring double in the fifth and Andrew Patterson had a sacrifice fly.

Matt Anderson hit a solo home run in the fourth for Oxford Hills and Brian Jennnigs doubled.

On Tuesday night, the Witches will likely be facing Rogers, who may become the first Maine high schooler ever to selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft, which is set Monday. Rogers could go as high as the top 10 and has been projected to go to Anaheim with the 12th pick.

Mount Ararat won its Saturday semifinal by edging Cony 8-7 in eight innings. Rogers pitched Mount Ararat to a quarterfinal win on Friday when he shut out Hampden 4-0, striking out 17 and allowing only one hit.
