Houlton tips Dexter, gains spot in final

HOULTON – Laurie Bissonnette singled twice and drove in a pair of runs to lead the No. 2 Houlton High School Shiretowners to a 4-1 Eastern Maine Class C semifinal softball victory over Dexter Saturday.

Houlton will battle Central of Corinth for the regional title 7 p.m. Wednesday at Coffin Field in Brewer.

Natasha Richie threw a five-hitter and contributed an RBI single and Anna Lenentine had a double for the winners.

Cindy Koscielny had a pair of singles for the No. 6 Tigers.

Erskine 5, Belfast 0

At Belfast, freshman Ashley Zibura tossed a no-hitter with no walks and one strikeout to lead No. 8 Erskine Academy of South China to the win over No. 5 Belfast.

Brittany Oxley hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning for the Eagles. Amanda Fortin had two singles with two RBIs and Angela Goodrich doubled.

Stephanie Whittier struck out six for Belfast.

Winslow 4, Ellsworth 2

At Winslow, Brittany Morin singled in Cathy Sirois and later scored an insurance run by scoring on a passed ball to help lead No. 2 Winslow past No. 3 Ellsworth.

Beth LaFountain pitched a seven-hitter en route to her 10th win, striking out six.

Maggie Seavey hit a RBI triple for Ellsworth in the third inning.

At Corinth, Alyssa Libby tossed a four-hitter, striking out four and walking three, to pitch No. 1 Central past No. 5 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln.

Shawna Bell doubled and singled and had an RBI for the Red Devils and Traci Underhill also doubled and singled. Jenny Rollins, Lindsey Mitchell, and Nikki Daniel each doubled and drove home a run.

Jaide Littlefield hit a triple and a single and scored a run for Mattanawcook.

Hodgdon 16, Shead 9

At Eastport, Lindsay Stewart hit two doubles and a single and knocked in a pair of runs and Jolene Ledger delivered four runs with a pair of doubles to help lead No. 9 Hodgdon past No. 4 Shead.

Amanda Scott tripled and singled and had three RBIs for Hodgdon. Samantha Williams had three singles with two RBIs and Erin Foster and Tasha Dwyer each doubled and singled.

Fawn Cummings hit two singles and plated a run for Shead and Britney Lingley added two singles.

At Fort Fairfield, Ashlee Peter doubled and singled and drove in four runs in the 12-run fourth inning to help lead No. 3 Ashland past No. 2 Fort Fairfield in the Class D Semifinals.

Kara Campbell had two singles with two RBIs for the Hornets. Lindsey Long, Amber Smith, Danielle Long, and Beth Chamberlin each hit two singles.

Whitney Searles singled twice and drove in a run for Fort Fairfield and Dani Searles hit a RBI single.

Brewer 4, Oxford Hills 2

At South Paris, Corey Cushing spun a two-hitter, fanning eight and walking two, to pace No. 3 Brewer to the victory over No. 2 Oxford Hills.

Matt Grimes had two singles and an RBI for the Witches and J.T. Davis singled twice. Andy Otis hit a run-scoring double in the fifth and Andy Patterson had a sacrifice fly.

Brewer coach Dave Morris said that Cushing’s pitching was the key.

“He pitched one heck of a game. It showed a lot of guts for a sophomore pitcher to go to their field and pitch the way he did,” said Morris.

Matt Anderson hit a solo home run in the fourth for Oxford Hills and Brian Jennnigs doubled.

At Winslow, Matt McLean squeezed home Andy Wheeler in the bottom of the ninth to give No. 1 Winslow the victory over No. 5 Mount Desert Island.

Corey Martin hit a three-run double in the first inning for Winslow and Taylor Helberg pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out eight.

Marcus Maffuci hit a run-scoring double in the sixth inning for MDI and the game-tying run came home on a misplayed Andy Pooler hit.

At Lincoln, Matt Nickerson fired a one-hitter, striking out two and walking one, to lead No. 7 Searsport past No. 3 Mattanawcook Academy.

Spencer Garton had a double, two singles and an RBI and Matt Mercer doubled and singled with a RBI. Caleb Ashey and Elijah Brazier each had a run-scoring double.

Jason Murchison’s RBI infield single was Mattanawcook’s lone hit.

At Dyer Brook, Josh Francis’ bases-loaded single highlighted No. 3 Shead’s five-run fourth winning en route to the victory over No. 2 Southern Aroostook.

The Tigers scored all five runs with two outs and the rally was kept alive by an Aaron Sullivan single before the Francis single.

Sullivan, also the winning pitcher, finished with two singles.

Evan Boutilier paced SAHS with three singles, including a two-run base hit in the third inning. Zack Philibert added an RBI single.

At Lee, Gerry Worster gave up only one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight to help push No. 1 Lee Academy past No. 5 Deer Isle-Stonington.

Nate Dow hit a two-run homer in the third for the Pandas. Everett Houghton had a two-run single in the fifth inning and Blaine Clark had two singles.

Shane Eaton hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for DI-Stonington and Bryant Ciomei added a RBI single in the third.
