The 155th Bangor State Fair is Friday, July 30, through Sunday, Aug. 8, at Bass Park.

Wendy Libby of Brewer is the coordinator for the Fine Arts Display at the fair, and she wants readers to be aware of that exhibit “so they can begin planning their artwork for the contest,” she wrote me recently.

“The contest is open to any artist” who wants to enter two-dimensional artwork “that is framed or matted and ready to hang,” she explained.

Included among the rules and regulations for entry are four that should be kept in mind.

First, all exhibits must be the original work (not copies) of the person who is exhibiting. Second, all must be recent works done within the past two years. Third, the artwork cannot have been entered in previous Bangor State Fair exhibits.

And, fourth, the exhibits must have appropriate attachments for hanging, or they will not be accepted.

Along with the photography display, the art display “will be located in the grandstand this year,” Libby explained, adding that “the renovated grandstand area is larger, now, with air conditioning and carpeting.”

Ribbons and monetary awards will be presented in various classifications and age categories.

Libby reports that entries will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, at the grandstand. Your entered works must be picked up between 5 and 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at that same site.

For additional information, you may obtain a premium booklet at the Bass Park business office or by calling Libby at 989-4728.

On June 4, Connie Small celebrated her 103rd birthday.

Known as the “First Lady of Light,” Small has given more than 500 lighthouse lectures and is the author of “the still best-selling book, ‘A Lighthouse Keepers Wife’,” reports Tim Harrison of the American Lighthouse Foundation.

“She and her husband served at many Maine lighthouses. She is still just as sharp as ever.”

He added that “it’s not too late” to send her a birthday card because even “if it arrives a few days late, she’d love hearing from you.”

Your special wishes can be sent to Connie Small, 346 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, N.H., 03801-4536.

Women golfers are invited to join the Bangor Women’s Golf Club.

The women play at Bangor Municipal Golf Course, and you do not need to be a member of the course or a Bangor resident to play.

The women play 18 holes each Thursday.

Their Twilight League is nine holes, played at 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays with a more informal format.

A Scotch Foursome is played at 3 p.m. Sundays; golfers may sign up as couples or individually.

Pairings for this event are arranged by the golf shop.

For more information, interested golfers may call Bangor Municipal Golf Course, 941-0232, or Kathy Constantine, 942-7794.

Maine Adoption Placement Service is hosting its annual picnic 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at Camp Med-o-Lark in Washington.

The picnic’s purpose, according to the placement service, is to celebrate children from all over the world who have been “placed in loving adoptive homes” by sharing lots of good food and fun games.

For more information about this event, call Gayle Knee, 772-3678.

For more information about the work of Maine Adoption Placement Service and how it might make a difference in your life, call Beth Gustafson at MAPS, 772-7555 or email bethg@mapsadopt.org.

Penobscot Theatre Company is preparing to conduct open auditions for the fall productions of “Dracula” and “The Crucible.”

The auditions are 4-6 p.m. Monday, June 21, and Tuesday, June 22, at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St.

At this stage of casting, the need is for actors age 16 and over and particularly for actors age 50 and over. More than 20 roles are available.

Auditioners should be prepared to deliver a memorized monologue (from a play) that is no longer than one minute, and are encouraged to bring a current resume and photograph or snapshot to be kept on file.

Actors who have previously auditioned for the company will be asked to read from a script for a specific role rather than presenting a monologue.

Audition appointments can be made with Elizabeth Eyerer or Katey Strout at 942-3333.
