VERNON, N.Y. – Former Vernon Downs driving champion Angus Allen, who won more than 1,100 harness races in his long career, has died.
Allen, who was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, died at his daughter Lauren’s home in Delaware on Friday. He was 88 and had only stopped training two years ago.
Allen entered harness racing at age 14 and began his driving career at tracks in his native province, working with such Canadian horsemen as Bill Cummings, John Conroy and Bill Hood.
