NEW SWEDEN – A Presque Isle man was arrested Saturday after he crashed a vehicle that he allegedly had stolen.

Craig Walton, 19, was charged with burglary, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, operating after suspension, violation of bail, theft of a motor vehicle and with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

He will make his initial court appearance today in Caribou District Court.

Walton’s arrest came after he lost control of a stolen 1986 Pontiac Fiero off Route 161 in New Sweden and collided with a telephone pole, according to Aroostook County Chief Deputy Craig Clossey. The vehicle was demolished, he said.

After the 7:30 a.m. accident, Walton was taken by ambulance to Cary Medical Center, where he was treated and later released.

Clossey said the vehicle had been taken from a residence in Van Buren Cove, a small township located near Van Buren.

While police were investigating the accident scene, they noticed that a camp in the area had been broken into. Clossey said some evidence linked Walton to the break.
