Members of the board of trustees of the Lura E. Hoit Pool in Hampden hope you will help them complete a special project by the end of the month.

Trustee Ralph Carr called to tell me the board has decided to landscape the entrance to the pool and is seeking individuals who are willing to help by either purchasing a plant or making a contribution to the project.

After our phone conversation, he provided me with a copy of the plan and, I must say, it is quite extensive and certainly will greatly enhance the entrance to that facility.

Designed by a volunteer master gardener team, the plan calls for 39 trees and shrubs of various sizes and prices.

The greenery ranges from rhododendrons to forsythia, red chokeberry and red maple trees to lilacs and dwarf mugho pine. Also needed, of course, are loam, mulch, boulders, granite pavers, soaker hoses and other items.

Contributions of $25 or more will be recognized on a plaque in the pool lobby, and you are invited to memorialize a loved one or cherished companion through the purchase of a plant.

All contributions are tax-deductible.

With the help of Stephanie Erb and Barbara Grant, the Old Town Community Youth Theatre Program will present the musical “Grease” at 7 p.m. Friday, June 11, and Saturday, June 12, at Old Town High School.

Admission is $2 per person.

Dr. Paul Shapero of Bangor announces that the Community Asthma Coalition of Eastern Maine is conducting a free Asthma Screening from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Wal-Mart in Bangor.

“This screening is for anybody who has any questions about asthma,” he said.

Shapero added that CACEM is offering the free informational screening to increase awareness about asthma and allergies.

Six gardens are included on the Winterport Garden Tour, which is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, June 12, rain or shine, in that community.

Additionally, Winterport Historical Association, Winterport Union Meeting House and Mermaid Cove B&B, all located on Main Street, will be open.

May Pardy reports that tickets are $10 each and can be purchased the day of the tour at the WHS building in the village.

You can also purchase lunch for $5 from 11: 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Columbian Hall, next to St. Gabriel Church on South Main Street.

Folks in the Old Town area have an opportunity to enjoy The Y-Players, who are appearing in “The Roaring Twenties” at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Old Town Museum on Main Street.

There is no admission fee for the fun-filled program, directed by Pam Martin, but all proceeds from donations will benefit the museum’s building maintenance fund.

The museum will open at 1 p.m., and it is handicap accessible.

Guests are invited to come early or stay after the performance to view museum displays.

For more than 16 years, Rape Response Services has been assisting people living in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties who are affected by sexual violence. Now RRS is offering a free, confidential group for men who have experienced sexual abuse.

The group sessions, which will take place in Bangor, begin 6-7:30 p.m. Monday, June 14. Sessions will end Monday, July 19.

The Angels on Hooves Therapeutic Riding Program of Charleston is conducting a “Penny Fundraiser” to benefit children involved in the program.

Prizes will be awarded for the most pennies raised, including the first prize of a week of Day Camp for the children’s winner and an Adult Riding Camp Weekend for the adult winner.

Entries are being accepted now through Friday, June 18, and winners will be notified the next day.
