Hermon, Winslow earn East crowns Lafountain no-hits Eagles

BREWER – Amanda Shorette didn’t think about what happened in last year’s Eastern Maine Class B softball final as she walked to the plate during the sixth inning of this year’s regional championship game.

Here’s a reminder: One out, top of the seventh. Runners on first and second. Shorette, told to sacrifice, grounds into a double play. Game over, Bucksport wins.

The situation in Wednesday’s game against No. 8 Erskine of South China was slightly different. But this time, Shorette made good on the sacrifice, lifting the Black Raiders to the Eastern Maine title.

Shorette bunted in Brynne Davis for the only run of the game as Winslow earned a 1-0 victory at Coffin Field, putting the Black Raiders into the Class B state game for the first time since 1998.

Winslow, which got a no-hitter from senior pitcher Beth Lafountain in the win, will return to Brewer Saturday for a 4 p.m. game against the winner of the Western Maine championship game between Maranacook of Readfield and Lake Region of Naples.

“We’re not done yet and it’s exciting,” said Lafountain, who was saddled with the loss in last year’s EM final.

Coach Steve Blood’s Raiders are 17-2.

It was Lafountain’s second no-hitter of the season. She struck out three and allowed two baserunners, both of whom reached on errors.

Lafountain was familiar with the Eagles – one of Winslow’s two losses this year came against Erskine.

“I knew I wanted to keep the ball down because they’re all big hitters,” she said. “They can put it in the outfield, so I didn’t want to give them anything to hit. They connected, but we have a great defense, so it didn’t matter that much.”

Erskine’s Tasha Kao made it to third on an error, a passed ball, and a sacrifice bunt, but Julie Sirois grounded into a double play.

“We put the ball in play, we just didn’t get the hits that we had in the past,” Erskine coach Lynn Chadwick said. “If we’re hitting the ball better we don’t have to worry about it. … We made a couple of errors and they cost us in that last inning.”

Davis led off the sixth with an infield hit, beating the tag at first. After a flyout, Rachel Boutin hit a ball to third and got to first on a bobbled throw. The error put Davis at third and Blood instructed Shorette to try a sacrifice.

She bunted an 0-1 pitch to Erskine pitcher Ashley Zibura, who fielded the ball and went for the out at first. Meanwhile, Davis scored.

“I kind of felt like I redeemed myself this year,” Shorette said. “It’s really, really exciting. Our goal was to get one run whether it was bunting or stealing. We just had to play smart. We had to win this.”

The Raiders felt comfortable with Shorette in a position where she could move baserunners.

“Shorette’s been getting bunts down, so we felt good with her,” Lafountain said.

Zibura had an excellent afternoon in the circle allowing just three hits.
