Pioneers score five in second, snap ‘Jacks’ 6-game win streak

BANGOR – The Elmira Pioneers scored five runs in the second inning and held off the Bangor Lumberjacks for an 8-6 Northeast League victory Wednesday night at Husson College’s Winkin Complex.

The Pioneers (2-11) received RBI singles from Ryan Smith, Cleatus Davidson, and Jeremy Dodson and tallied twice on errors in their big inning in snapping the Lumberjacks’ six-game winning streak.

The Lumberjacks (8-6) have today off before starting a seven-game road trip at North Shore (Mass.) on Friday.

The Lumberjacks, who committed six errors in the game, crept back within a run twice – 6-5 in the fifth inning and 7-6 in the seventh – but couldn’t catch the Pioneers.

Bangor left fielder Derry Hammond gave the ‘Jacks their first run with a solo homer in the second and shortstop Shin Uchino gave them their second when he stole home later in the inning.

After Elmira added a run in the top of the third on Jason Bryan’s home run, Bangor tallied twice in the fourth on Uchino’s RBI single and Jake Whitesides’ RBI fielder’s choice.

Ryan Sienko scored on an error by Pioneer first baseman Jeff Funaro in the fifth to make it 6-5.

Steve Checksfield raced home on a passed ball in the seventh to push Elmira’s lead to 7-5, and Bangor trimmed it again in the eighth when Uchino scored on Jose Garcia’s sacrifice fly.

Elmira scored an insurance run in the ninth.

Joe Van Gorder (1-1) pitched the first six innings to pick up the win for Elmira, and Joe Winkelsas earned his first save.
