Schools

4-H Foundation

The Pine Tree State 4-H Foundation awarded Gabriel Guerin of Glenburn the 2004 Evelyn Trotsky Post-Secondary Educational Scholarship of $1,000. Guerin, a member of 4-H for 10 years, received the award at the foundation’s annual meeting May 14 in Orono. He has served as treasurer of the Penobscot Sheep Club for 51/2 years, was vice president of his high school class and was a trustee of the 4-H Foundation for three years.

Guerin has been involved in Centennial Conversations, global education and international travel, 4-H Congress, golf team, math team, musicals and chorus. He has won local and state science fair awards, done market lamb and beekeeping projects and plays piano and guitar. He plans to study microbiology at Eastern University in Pennsylvania where he has been accepted into the honors college.

The 4-H Foundation awarded Anna Schwarcz of Orrington the 2004 Harold H. Brown International Travel Award of $1,000 for travel to Ecuador. A sophomore at John Bapst Memorial High School, Schwarcz will travel with a group of students from a high school in Manassas, Va., for 10 days.

Georgia-Pacific awards

Scholarships of $1,000 funded by Georgia-Pacific Corp. will be awarded to three area high school graduates who plan to pursue bachelor’s degrees in engineering, computer science, business, accounting or pulp and paper science.

Recipients are Alfred Haskell III of Brewer High School, who will study civil engineering at the University of Maine; Margo Relford, also of Brewer, who will study chemical engineering at UMaine; and Danielle Lainez of Bangor High School, who will study business at East Carolina University.

Science fair winners

BREWER – The Maine Middle School Science Fair was held May 3 at Brewer High School. More than 300 pupils representing 30 schools participated in the competition.

This year’s fair had three categories – biology, physics and inventions. The first-place finishers are:

. Sixth grade: Kristin Dillon, Dexter, biology, “Finding Demo-Dex;” Jake Chicoine, Sumner, invention, “Shoe Lace Keeper;” Carl Zurhost, Mexico, physics, “Sound Propagation.”

. Seventh grade: Ryan Larochelle, Bangor, biology, “Say Cheese;” Kendra Lyman, Livermore Falls, invention, “The Survival Stick;” Emily Fraser, Brewer, physics, “World of Color.”

. Eighth grade: Jacob Wood, Bangor, biology, “Yeast;” Ryan Potter, Caravel, invention, “Heavy Pot Hauler;” Alyssa Crane, Dexter, physics, “Stuffy Schools.”

Bangor High School

BANGOR – Artwork by Bangor High School students is on display throughout June at Bangor Public Library. Graphic artists are showing their work in the lecture hall and photographers in the stairwell gallery.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Members of the Brewer High School student council recently attended the Maine Association of Student Council’s annual convention at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. State president David Haluska presided at the convention.

Brewer High School received awards for collecting the most food for the Help Hungry Kids campaign for being an honor council and for hosting the fall Eastern Regional Conference and the Spring Leadership Conference. Adviser Mike Hutchins was named the state student council Adviser of the Year.

Brewer Middle School

BREWER – Shannon Greaney, 33, of Milo, a teaching specialist with Jobs for Maine Graduates at Brewer Middle School, was named Teacher of the Year by the Brewer Wal-Mart.

Greaney administers the program of life and leadership skills to 30 Brewer Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade pupils. She helps prepare pupils for high school and the demands of life that come after high school graduation. Brewer Middle School became a host for the program in 1997, one of nine middle schools in Maine to provide the program.

Teen Parent Education

BANGOR – Good Samaritan Agency’s Teen Parent Education Program, an alternative education program for pregnant and parenting teens, will graduate 11 young women at 10 a.m. today at the agency. Janet W. Pease will be the keynote speaker.

Good Samaritan Agency is a nonprofit agency founded in 1902 which offers services to single parents, including a day care program, alternative education and adoption services. For information, call the agency at 942-7211.

Global Young Leaders

HERMON – Adam Blakeway of Hermon has been selected to participate in the Global Young Leaders Conference July 11-22 in Washington and New York City.

The conference is a leadership development program for secondary school students from around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Blakeway is one of 350 scholars who will attend the conference with the theme, “The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for the Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future.”

Orono High School

ORONO – Orono High School has announced the top 10 students, listed alphabetically, in its graduating class: Olivia Alford, Parker Eason, Philip Gillett, Felicia King, Thomas Leick, Lauren Onsrud, Lura Raymond, Greta Schroeder, Christopher Sterling, Ryan Tipping-Spitz and Michaelee Westhoven.

Colleges

Honor society

OLD TOWN – Lauren Swett of Old Town recently received an Award of Excellence for the 2004-2005 academic year from Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and largest all-discipline honor society. She was one of 100 students nationwide to receive the Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship and Award of Excellence. The award will help Swett pursue a graduate degree at the University of Maine.

Bates College

LEWISTON – Anna M. Sleeper, a student at Bates College, recently participated in the third annual Mount David Summit, a campuswide exposition of student academic work.

She presented a poster titled, “The Effects of Varying Concentrations and Time Exposure of Arsenite Oxide on the Citric Acid Cycle.” A junior biological chemistry major, Sleeper is a junior adviser.

She is a 2001 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School and the daughter of Richard and Sharon Sleeper of Brewer.

Eastern Maine Community College

BANGOR – Eastern Maine Community College’s summer course schedule for credit and noncredit day, evening, off-campus and distance courses is now available. Call 974-4621 to obtain a copy of the schedule.

Nearly 200 summer courses, including standard degree requirement courses, specialty interest courses and training courses, will be available at EMCC’s Bangor campus and at outreach centers in Belfast, Dover-Foxcroft, East Millinocket and Ellsworth. Courses also will be accessible online or by ITV. Three thousand ACT courses are available through the Bangor Business and Industry Center on the EMCC campus.

Summer courses are offered in Spring-Summer Term, Summer Term B and a Summer Academy for teachers.

Evergreen State College

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Clare Davitt of Bangor will graduate June 11 from Evergreen State College. She will receive a bachelor of arts degree during commencement ceremonies.

Husson College

BANGOR – Husson College students from Greater Bangor received recognition at graduation ceremonies on May 15.

Jacklin Hamadey of Brewer was named salutatorian of the 2004 graduating class.

William Jewell of Bangor received the Husson Watch Award as the outstanding student in accounting. A 1999 graduate of Bangor High School, he graduated with highest honors.

Stephen Dumond of Clifton graduated with highest honors and received the Husson Watch Award as the outstanding student in computer information systems. He is a 1977 graduate of Central High School.

Jessica Harriman of Carmel graduated with highest honors and received the Husson Watch Award as the outstanding student in science and humanities, She is a 2000 graduate of Hermon High School.

Janis Veilette of Holden graduated with high honors received the Husson Plaque Award in nursing. She is a 1993 graduate of Hermon High School.

New England School of Communications

BANGOR – The New England School of Communications recognized 95 students who achieved high honor and honor grades during the spring semester.

Area students receiving high honor status are: Emily Farkas, Bangor; John Schneck, Bangor; Kathleen Hutchinson, Carmel; Bret Johnson, Winterport; Holly Lusignan, Dixmont; Mike Rancourt, Hermon; and Matt Stepp, Newburgh.

Area students receiving honors are: Art Bigelow, Bangor; Adam Carlow, Brewer; Torrey Courtemarche, Brewer; Jared Paschal, Glenburn; David Potter, Glenburn; Jen Wilbur, Hermon; Aaron Blackmer, Dedham; Adam Davis, Old Town; Dan Marquez, Orono; Rachel McDonald, Milford; and Anne McDougal, Bangor.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Ryan Field of Bangor received a bachelor’s degree in business administration; Matthew Brown of Glenburn received a bachelor’s degree in science; and Nathan Van Allen of Orono received a doctoral degree in pharmacy during graduation ceremonies at Northeastern University on May 1.

Oklahoma State University

STILLWATER, Okla. – Erin Batty of Bangor was named to the honor roll for the spring semester at Oklahoma State University.

University of Connecticut

STORRS, Conn. – Leslie Matthews has been named to the dean’s list in the school of engineering at the University of Connecticut. She is the daughter of Andrew and Laura Matthews of Hampden.

University of Maine

ORONO – Christopher M. Hill of Glenburn, a University of Maine mechanical engineering student working at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, has received an award for his work on an International Space Station project.

John “Tip” Talone, director of International Space Station and payload processing at Kennedy Space Center, presented the award to Hill on April 21. Hill received the award for his involvement in the development of three unique tools that will be used to verify the torque and lock fasteners in hard-to-access areas on the International Space Station Truss Elements P4 and S4.

He worked with engineers from Boeing-International Space Station Ground Operations, NASA-Kennedy Space Center, NASA-Johnson Space Center, and the NASA Prototype Lab.

The project allowed Hill to experience firsthand an engineer’s role in bringing a project from concept to final product. Upon the shuttle’s return to flight, the P3-P4 and S3-S4 Truss Elements are scheduled to be delivered to the International Space Station on space shuttle missions STS-115 and STS-117, respectively.

ORONO – Jody Lewia of Levant graduated with high honors from the University of Maine on May 8. She received a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders and is enrolled in UMaine’s speech pathology graduate program.

University of Southern Maine

PORTLAND – Michael Harper, a 1991 graduate of Old Town High School, graduated recently from the University of Southern Maine. He earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology. He is the son of Marlene Allen of Clifton.

Toni Chapman Moleon received a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Southern Maine. A 1971 graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of George and Chickie Chapman of Bangor.
