$1.4 million budget approved in Union

UNION – Residents approved all articles on Monday’s town meeting warrant, including a $1.4 million budget for the coming year. The $1,422,585 spending plan represents a 7.2 percent increase, compared with last year’s budget.

As a result of the vote, the amount to be raised by property taxes will be $747,331, an 8.5 percent increase. On Tuesday, Town Manager Andrew Hart said he did not yet know what the impact will be on the tax rate because the SAD 40 budget is not finished and the assessor is still making some adjustments to land values.

The current tax rate is $16.10 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

The town’s share of SAD 40 costs is estimated at $1,532,050, up 5.4 percent, while the Knox County assessment is $165,550, up 12 percent, excluding the county emergency dispatch fee.

In the approved budget, the town manager’s salary rose 7 percent, to $51,900, and employees got 4 percent pay raises.

In separate articles, voters authorized the purchase of a $65,000 backhoe and an $80,000 public works 1-ton truck, a snowplow and a sander.
