AUGUSTA – An Augusta man died from injuries he received when he was struck by a train while fishing from a trestle over a stream in Belgrade.
Gerald Kinnie, 32, died after being removed from life support Monday. He was airlifted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious head injuries after the accident Sunday afternoon.
Kinnie was fishing with a friend when he apparently lost his balance as the 78-car freight train went by on its way from Bangor to Portland, according to witnesses. He reportedly fell back toward the train striking his head against one of the cars.
Guilford Rail System said the accident underscores the danger of trespassing on railroad tracks.
