AUBURN – A convicted sex offender living in Maine has been charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking a Durham man with a steel rod.

Ronald Leno, 56, was being held at the Androscoggin County Jail.

State Rep. Mike Vaughn, R-Durham, said he had been asking state officials how Leno was allowed to move to Durham without notifying the community that he was a convicted sexual offender.

Vaughn said Leno had been convicted of multiple sexual assaults in Massachusetts.

He said Leno was driving by a Durham home Saturday and saw the Texas flag flying. He said Leno stopped at the house to speak with a woman and then beat her husband when he approached Leno.

Police notified Durham residents last week that Leno was a convicted sex offender. Police said they didn’t know Leno was living in Durham until a woman filed a complaint against him with Brunswick police.
