Foster hit nets PVC tie A-D stars rally in softball game

BANGOR – The members of the Brewer High School softball team know all about late rallies, which helped the Witches win the Eastern Maine Class A title earlier this month. It happened again, in a way, during Wednesday evening’s Penobscot Valley Conference All-Star game.

Kim Foster, a senior who served as the Witches’ designated hitter during the regular season, hit a two-run single for the A-D all-star team to tie the game in the top of the 10th. The game ended with a 4-4 score after 10 scheduled innings.

The Bangor High field doesn’t have lights, and with the game ending at around 8 p.m. – plus the fact that several of the players plan to participate in Thursday evening’s senior all-star games in Augusta – the game ended in a tie.

Foster slapped a flare to center field, deep enough to score Hampden’s Erika Veinote and Sarah DeFilipp of Brewer scored on the hit.

B-C pitcher Rachel Joyce of Orono had walked two already in the inning and threw 10 straight balls at one point.

“I got lucky on a pitch I guess,” Foster said. “We just got together and did what we had to do. … This year we were just the comeback team.”

Joyce did strike out two in the 10th and finished with four in two innings of work.

Foster wasn’t the only Brewer player to help with the rally. DeFilipp singled earlier in the inning to plate Brewer teammate Anna Corey, who had walked.

Pitcher-right fielder DeFilipp got the most work in the circle with three scoreless, hitless innings.

There were just nine hits in the game as teams played solid defense and pitchers allowed few baserunners.

The B-C stars made the most of their chances in the sixth inning. Schenck of East Millinocket’s Jessica Day drew a leadoff walk and came around on a combination of errors and a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1. Alice Andrews of Bucksport reached on an error and got home thanks to passed balls and wild pitches.

“I thought we had quite a bit of speed,” said Central of Corinth’s Shawna Bell, who was hit by a pitch and also scored in the sixth.

Bell, a catcher who is hoping to play at Husson College next year, doubled in the second.

Bangor’s Kelly White gave the A-D team an early lead when she doubled and eventually scored on an error in the first inning.

Ending the game in a tie wasn’t a big deal for Bell.

“I’m fine with this,” she said. “It was fun.”

The A-D team was coached by Old Town’s Mike Thurston and Orono’s Michelle Grindle. The B-C all-stars were coached by Penquis of Milo’s Dick Martin and Schenck’s Frank Clukey.
