Fruit Street School

BANGOR – Third-graders from Fruit Street School earned an honorable mention in Scholastic Book Fair’s Kids Are Authors competition, a national book-writing contest for teams of writers in kindergarten through grade eight.

The pupils’ book, “A Visit to an Art Museum,” was selected from among thousands of entries nationwide. The book is about a class field trip to a local art museum. Pupils re-create the art of the masters on each page. The young authors will receive certificates of merit and a $200 Scholastic merchandise voucher for their school.

Students from Estes Hill Elementary School in Chapel Hill, N.C., penned the program’s grand prize winner in fiction, “Nora The Nonapus,” about a shy cephalopod with nine tentacles who helps save her classmates from a bully.

Students from Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach, Miss., earned the grand prize for their nonfiction book, “Color For Thought,” which describes the colors that make up our world.

Both schools will receive a $2,000 Scholastic merchandise certificate. Twenty-five entries earned honorable mention accolades.

Tens of thousands of pupils participated in the competition. Topics ranged from recess to the war in Iraq. A group of pupils from Batesville, Miss., enlisted the aid of actor Morgan Freeman to help them write their book about a celebrity who visits a small town. The panel of judges included children’s book authors and illustrators Loreen Leedy, Lin Oliver, Christopher Myers, Mark Teague and Tony DiTerlizzi.

“It was difficult to choose two winners from the many outstanding submissions we received,” said David Krishock, president of Scholastic Book Fairs. “The level of sophistication and creativity demonstrated by this year’s entries proves you are never too young to be an author.”
