Today is the 115th Anniversary of the Bangor Daily News. For 109 of those years, the NEWS has been owned by my family and five of us have served as Publishers of the paper. They are J. Norman Towle, Frederick D. Jordan, Lillis T. Jordan, Richard K. Warren and myself. While we have each faced different challenges, we have all shared an abiding faith in Maine and Maine people and that faith has formed the foundation of our efforts to daily produce a newspaper of credibility and value to our readers and for our advertisers.
Lawrence T. Smythe, the editor of the NEWS for over forty years, once wrote: “The past is a closed book, a tale that is told, a memory that is treasured by those of us who lived in its sunshine and who have survived its storms. Men come and men go, but in the making of a newspaper there is no end. Hands tire, eyes grow weary, but there must, ever and always, be chapters of life’s story. The newspaper must be up with the sun…”
I hope you find the pull-out poster about us, yesterday and today, interesting.
