Turgeon powers West senior stars by East 14-1

ORONO – Ryan Turgeon was a bit battered and bruised as his high school baseball season ended.

The St. Dominic of Auburn standout could barely throw, the result of a late-season collision that injured his right shoulder, but he still led the Saints to the Western Maine Class C championship.

A week of rest apparently did the Bowdoin College-bound Turgeon some good, as he reached base three times and drove in three runs Friday night to lead the West to a 14-1 victory over the East in the 13th annual Maine High School Senior All-Star Baseball Classic at Mahaney Diamond.

Turgeon doubled, tripled, walked and hit a sacrifice fly as the West pounded out 14 hits off seven East pitchers.

“I can’t really throw yet,” said Turgeon, “but hitting-wise I feel fine and I was able to get a couple of hits tonight. This was great, just to get a chance to play with guys from all over the state.”

Matt Curran of Class D state champion North Yarmouth Academy added a triple and two infield singles for the West, while Ryan Copp of Greely of Cumberland Center had two singles.

Ryan Levesque of Orono had two of the East’s eight hits, a double and a single. Stefan Wrigley of Messalonskee of Oakland added a triple.

Copp was the only finalist for the Dr. John Winkin Award symbolic of Mr. Baseball in the state who played in the game. Mark Rogers of Mount Ararat, winner of the award, sat out after signing a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers earlier in the day. Adam Vachon of Cony of Augusta and Ryan Reid of Deering of Portland did not attend.

“This was amazing, I love this place,” said Copp, who hopes to walk on to the University of Maine team next season. “It’s just an honor to be here and get to play on one of the best fields in the state.”

Turgeon doubled home a run in the first inning to give the West a 1-0 lead off East starter Josh Young of Bangor.

Copp led off the West second with an infield hit and scored on a groundout by Charlie Furbush of South Portland.

The West broke the game open with three runs in the third and three more runs in the fourth. Turgeon hit an RBI triple in the third and scored on a single by Copp. Copp advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Luke Rand of Falmouth doubled.

Furbush led off the West fourth with a double, and Turgeon added a sacrifice fly as two of the West’s three runs in the inning were unearned.

The East broke through in the fifth against Kyle Fecteau of Biddeford. Harrison Hines of Class C state champion George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill hit a leadoff single to left, and scored on a one-out double to left-center by Taylor Helberg of Winslow.

The West made it 9-1 with a run in the sixth on three walks and a fielder’s choice grounder by Andrew Wood of South Portland.

Jake Turner of Jay hit a two-run single to highlight a five-run West rally in the top of the eighth, with Curran adding an RBI triple.
