A Brewer man was arrested Sunday after being accused of threatening to kill another man with a kitchen knife in a Court Street apartment.

Elias Elias of Bangor reported to the Bangor Police Department that a man with no shirt had grabbed him by the neck at the apartment where Elias had been visiting a friend. Elias said the man grabbed a black-handled kitchen knife from a drawer and put it to Elias’ throat, saying he had always wanted to kill a Jew.

Elias said the man chased him from the kitchen where Elias had been feeding the cat, into the living room and threw him onto the couch. Other people in the room were able to get the man away from Elias long enough for him to run out of the building and to the police station.

Officer Robert Angelo went to the apartment where he found a man later identified as Timothy Newell, 32, with no shirt. Elias later identified Newell as the man who threatened to kill him. Angelo said Newell was drunk and became defensive when asked to show his identification. When questioned about the incident, Newell said that it was a misunderstanding but would not comment about the knife.

Angelo said the other four people in the apartment were clearly drunk, but he spoke with Jeffrey Cleveland who was the easiest to understand. Cleveland of Bangor said he saw Newell throw Elias on the couch but did not see Newell with a knife. He said Newell was crazy and they were all afraid of him.

Newell had an active warrant out of Calais District Court for failing to pay $205 cash bail. He was arrested and charged with criminal threatening with a weapon and transported to Penobscot County Jail where he remained Monday.

The next morning, Elias was accused of stealing $27.30 worth of merchandise from Shaw’s Supermarket on Main Street. Officer Michael Brennan arrested Elias for shoplifting and transported him to Penobscot County Jail. Elias said he was just doing what he needed to survive and claimed he was going to sue the Bangor Police Department, the county and the state.

An Oronowoman transporting opium and painkillers was arrested Monday by the Veazie Police Department.

Officer T.J. Warner stopped Brandy Brooks, 19, on State Street for an expired inspection sticker. She had no current insurance or registration, and her license had been suspended in May.

After arresting Brooks, Warner searched the car and found 11 pills in a cosmetics bag. He took Brooks to Penobscot County Jail and contacted poison control, which determined that eight of the pills were Ultraset/Tramadol, an opiate-type narcotic. The other three were Piroxicam, painkillers available only by prescription.

Brooks was charged with unlawful possession of a schedule W drug, operating after suspension, and was issued a traffic summons for failing to display a valid inspection sticker. She was out on bail Monday evening.

Bangor police officers chased a Brewer man who was allegedly driving drunk and without a license from The Tavern on Main Street to State and Essex streets Sunday morning. Officers Shawn Green and Dennis Townsend were on bike patrol in the downtown area when they noticed a man driving a green Ford Taurus with a loud and possibly incomplete exhaust system pull into the bar’s parking lot. When Green told the man to stop, he looked over at the officers and continued driving out the back entrance.

The officers chased the man, who drove through a stop sign and a flashing red light until he was stopped on State Street by Bangor police Officer Erik Tall. Bernard Baker, 38, admitted to drinking four or five beers, and his blood alcohol level tested at 0.12 percent. Baker produced a West Virginia driver’s license, but officers could find no active driver’s license in Maine or West Virginia for Baker.

Baker was charged with operating under the influence and operating without a license. He also was summoned for failing to stop at a stop sign and failing to stop at a flashing red light.
