A divine time

It’s time to kick up your heels – or just kick back – at The Vinery. The Blue Hill bistro and piano bar has opened for the season with a nightly lineup of local musicians as well as light food and drink at the bar, indoors in the brick room, or outside in the orchard and gardens. The Vinery serves lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday; and supper from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday. For information, call 374-2441.

Do the salsa

Cilantro doesn’t just taste good – it can be good for you, too, according to a recent study by University of California researcher Isao Kubo. Kubo found that dodecenal, a compound found in fresh cilantro leaves, kills harmful salmonella bacteria. One way to kick up your cilantro count is to add fresh salsa to your diet, such as Blue Hill’s own Sisters Salsa, which is chock full of tomatoes, onions, fruit juices and – you guessed it – cilantro. It’s available at Hannaford stores, specialty shops or online at www.salsafy.com

Pie hopes

If you’re among the upper crust, you may want to check out the Waldo County Pie and Story Festival, a celebration of homemade pies and the tales that accompany them. Any and all pies will be accepted – sweet, savory, or anything in between. Ribbons will be awarded for pies in five categories: most beautiful, most original, most traditional, yummy mess and best pie with a story, which will be shared during an open-mike session. The event will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 27, at the Belfast U-U Church. For information, visit www.jenniferarmstrong.com or call Armstrong at 338-6616 or Susan Guthrie at 338-6140.
