BANGOR – Clayton Andrews and Jake Whitesides turned Wednesday night’s Northeast League game into a revenge and birthday party as they teamed up to lead the Bangor Lumberjacks to a 6-1 victory over the Aces.
Andrews, who was claimed by Bangor after the Aces put him on waivers last week, pitched a complete game against his former teammates, allowing seven hits and one walk while notching three strikeouts on a clear, cool night at Winkin Complex.
“That put a little extra spark into it,” said Andrews, who admitted he was pumped up to face his former team. “As soon as I threw the first pitch, the nerves went away and it felt like a normal game.”
The 26-year-old lefthander said his command of the fastball was so-so and his changeup was ineffective, but his curve worked well and he mixed his pitches effectively enough to keep the Aces off balance.
“He threw 109 pitches and 81 of them were strikes, and he threw 26 of his 35 first pitches for strikes,” said Bangor pitching coach Kevin Pincavitch. “He had an ideal outing for us.”
Whitesides, who turned 23 on the 23rd, hit a two-run home run and an RBI triple in four at-bats.
“I tried not to let anyone know it was my birthday, but once they announced it on the PA, everybody knew,” said the Columbia, Miss., native. “This is the first time I’ve ever played a pro game on my birthday. I guess I should do it more often.”
Bangor is now 12-14 with two straight wins while the Aces slumped to 4-20.
The Lumberjacks cracked the scoreboard first with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rolando Bello reached on an error to start things off and Whitesides scored him with a triple to the left-center gap. One out later, Derry Hammond muscled a fastball 340 feet down the right field line for a two-run homer – his seventh of the season.
“That was probably one of the best exhibitions of pure strength. It was a short, compact swing on a fastball away and he was just trying to hit a sacrifice fly,” said Bangor manager Kash Beauchamp. “He’s got Jim Rice strength. He’s got the most I’ve seen since I played with Cecil Fielder.”
The Aces got a run back in the fifth on J.P. Schmidt’s leadoff homer to right-center, but Bangor regained its three-run lead in the seventh. Hammond was it by a pitch, stole second, and went to third on Mark Burke’s single off pitcher Alex Pena’s ankle. He scored on a double-play grounder to short.
The Lumberjacks tacked on two more runs in the eighth on Whitesides’ two-run homer to right-center – a 375-foot shot – with two outs.
The Aces had their second player ejected in as many days when Greg Schmidt was tossed for arguing with first base umpire Sean Schofield after Schofield called him out on a pickoff play at second base in the sixth.
