Park bone fragment part of human’s jaw

AUGUSTA – A bone fragment found last week outside Baxter State Park belonged to a human jaw, the state medical examiner’s office confirmed on Wednesday.

The piece, which contained parts of three molars, will be examined by a forensic anthropologist to determine DNA in the next couple days, the medical examiner’s office said.

Maine State Trooper Matt Grant took the bone to the medical examiner’s office on Monday. He said two trail hikers found the piece late last week outside a campground in Township 2 Range 9 WELS.

The hikers took the bone to the gatekeeper at Togue Pond, who reported it to police over the weekend, Grant said Monday.

Of the few missing persons cases in the Baxter State Park area, one involves the disappearance of Thomas Jacoby, 18 of Pennsylvania.

Jacoby left his home in Pennsylvania in 1991, drove to Maine and disappeared in the north woods carrying a .38 caliber revolver.

Jacoby’s vehicle and some of his personal items have been recovered since his disappearance, but no one has seen or heard from him.
