Summer food program

BANGOR – The Bangor School Department is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to children ages 1-18 without charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all, regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Breakfast will be provided 8-8:30 a.m. and lunch 11-11:45 a.m. Monday-Friday, July 26-Aug. 6, at the Downeast School.

Happy Birthday, Doc

BANGOR – During a Mass on June 9, Bernard “Doc” Mann was honored on the occasion of his 95th birthday at St. John’s Catholic Church.

Mann was recognized for his many years of service to All Saints Catholic School.

All Saints eighth-grader Joseph Moore spoke to Mass attendees, highlighting his experience as a chess player under Mann’s tutelage, as well as his knowledge of the gentleman’s service to the Bangor community in general.

Mann was then presented a gift by All Saints Principal Marcia Diamond, followed by a standing ovation and rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” from the congregation. A well-attended reception was held in the church hall afterward.

Army Reserve awards

BANGOR – Bangor Christian School students Kellie Wiswell and Daniel McCleary are the recipients of U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Staff Sgt. Gregory Boivin and Capt. Marcel Fortier presented the medals to the two students at Bangor Christian graduation ceremonies June 11.

Nationwide, 20,000 students from 12,000 schools receive the Army Reserve awards.

Central High School

CORINTH – Kurt Smith, a junior at Central High School, was selected to represent the Maine Educational Talent Search Program for the National Student Leadership Congress in Washington. He will join students representing each state in the union, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Pacific Islands.

Smith was one of two students chosen to represent Maine Educational Talent Search.

The National Student Leadership Congress is a six-day residential experience designed to introduce students to elements of effective leadership, workshops on decision making and problem solving, national service, the political process and coalition building, and multi-culturalism and diversity.

As a participant, Smith will attend sessions with policy-makers and educational leaders. He will attend meetings with members of Congress and take part in a mock congressional hearing. He will gain greater knowledge of the role of alliances in shaping national priorities and of career opportunities in government, public service and education. He will visit historical sites and have a formal dinner on Capitol Hill.

Smith is the son of Alan and Anne-Marie Smith of Kenduskeag.

Fruit Street School

BANGOR – Teachers and pupils at Fruit Street School had something to cheer about as the school year came to a close. Teachers worked with Bangor Fire Department education officer Shellie Tourtilliotte to hold the second annual Summer Safety Day to raise safety awareness among their pupils in kindergarten to grade three.

The day began with the arrival of the Downeast Medical Institute helicopter. Children rotated through stations that included a Maine State Game Warden Service K-9 search and rescue demonstration, a child identification program sponsored by the St. Andrews Lodge Masonic Order, a Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department crime van, and Stranger Danger presentation.

Bangor Fire Department Station 5 gave tours of a firetruck, ambulance, rollover simulator and smoke house.

The third annual Celebrate Healthy Eating, Exercise and Recreation took place the next day. Children and staff decorated red, white and blue T-shirts. University of Maine, Jack Cosgrove, a parent of three Fruit Street School pupils, kicked off the opening ceremonies.

At noon, UMaine quarterback Ron Whitcomb and Coach Bobby Wilbur talked about the need for healthy choices and the importance of education. Children had an opportunity to make and eat fruit and vegetable snacks. The pupils’ families and Hannaford stores donated food.

The children were reminded of the importance of physical fitness by participating in aerobics, dancing, bowling and track and field activities.

Community readers reinforced the concept of good nutritional habits with readings from children’s literature.

Pupils throughout the school constructed a pyramid with food donations, which were donated to the Manna Food Cupboard at the end of the day.

Organizers credit the success of the day to local organizations, families, school staff and resources made available by Janet Spender of the Bangor Region Partners for Health.

Colleges

Bates College

LEWISTON – Ryan Nadeau of Bradley, Adam Waite of Hampden and Sarah M. Gray of Orono received degrees during graduation ceremonies May 31 at Bates College.

An Old Town High School graduate, Nadeau is the son of Thomas and Janice Nadeau of Bradley. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Waite is the son of Ann Smith of Hampden and James Waite of Newport. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics.

A graduate of Orono High School, Gray is the daughter of Madeleine Martin of Orono and Ken Gray of Wiscasset. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience.

Boston University

BOSTON – Earning bachelor’s degrees during commencement ceremonies this spring at Boston University were:

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Abigail Bouzan-Kaloustian of Orrington and Benjamin Erker of Orono have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bucknell University.

Bouzan-Kaloustian is the daughter of Laura Bouzan and Yann Kaloustian.

Erker is the son of David and Victoria Erker.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Kevin Turner received a bachelor’s degree during commencement exercises May 23 at Bucknell University. A 2000 graduate of Bangor High School, he is the son of James and Mary Turner of Bangor.

Colby College

WATERVILLE – Nicholas Loukes, Theresa Leyro, James Bradford and Christopher Blier were among the 484 seniors who received bachelor’s degrees during commencement ceremonies May 23 at Colby College. All four were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the college.

Loukes is the son of Richard Loukes of Bangor.

Leyro is the daughter of Elvin and Maria Leyro of Hampden.

Bradford is the son of John and Marjorie Bradford of Bangor.

Blier is the son of Alan and Susan Blier of Hermon.

Connecticut College

NEW LONDON – Ashley Leighton of Glenburn and Kate Kovenock of Orono have been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Connecticut College.

Hofstra University

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Corey Moran, a New York City resident who is from Bangor, will star in Hofstra USA Production’s summer offering, Stephen Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music.” She will play Mr. Erlansen.

Moran’s other stage credits include “The Baker’s Wife,” “Titanic,” “The Music Man,” “Beyond Therapy,” “La Boheme,” and “The Magic Flute.” She also had a role in the 100th episode of television’s “Will and Grace,” and in a recently filmed pilot for the Hallmark Channel’s “The Hallmark Cafe.”

Moran is a graduate of the Boston University School of Arts.

Middlebury College

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Sean Lena has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Middlebury College. A 2002 graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School, he is the son of Mark and Kathy Lena of Orono.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Ryan Field of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Northeastern University.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Matthew David Whalen of Brewer has accepted membership into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at Northeastern University.

The society is a selective, national, nonprofit honors organization established on the principle that with scholarship comes the responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service.

Whalen is the son of Cheryl and Matthew Whalen of Brewer.

Rivier College

NASHUA, N.H. – Kimberly Bragg of Veazie earned a degree in math, secondary education, at commencement exercises at Rivier College. She is the daughter of Rodney and Judy Bragg. Bragg graduated magna cum laude.

Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Ted Pearson Jr. of Winterport has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the son of Ted and Joni Pearson, and is a 2002 home-schooling graduate.

St. Lawrence University

CANTON, N.Y. – Shelley Megquier of Hampden was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at St. Lawrence University. She is a graduate of Hampden Academy.

Stonehill College

EASTON, Mass. – Kristan Strout of Bangor, Mikel Kearns of Orrington and Sarah Wellman of Winterport are recent graduates of Stonehill College.

University of Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Erica Prudente was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the University of Vermont. A 2001 graduate of Bangor High School, she is the daughter of Scot and Elizabeth Prudente of Bangor.

Western State College

GUNNISON, Colo. – John Sklenar, formerly of Bangor, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree this spring from Western State College. He is the son of John and Ada Sklenar.
