The road to the 67th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, makes its way through Houlton and Camden this weekend, with the final two of Maine’s four derbies scheduled for Saturday.
Organizers of the ninth annual Northern Maine Soap Box Derby in Houlton report 104 entries in the Super Stock and Stock divisions who will compete on Derby Hill, a course built especially for the Soap Box Derby located near Millar Arena.
That number is down slightly from last year, when 66 youths raced in the Stock division and 43 took part in the Super Stock competition for a total of 109.
Competition is set to get under way at 8 a.m. and run until approximately 3 p.m.
Race organizers in Camden are celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Mid-Coast Maine Soap Box Derby, with a variety of activities planned in conjunction with the event on Friday and Saturday, including a parade featuring previous local derby winners.
Competition on the Washington Street course will start at 8 a.m. Saturday with a race involving members of the Camden Select Board. The opening heats follow, with the awards ceremony expected to be held around 5 p.m. at MBNA.
Racers at the Camden event will compete in three divisions: Stock and Super Stock, for which boys and girls ages 8 through 17 assemble car kits purchased from the All-American Soap Box Derby, and Masters, for which youths ages 10 through 17 can build a car from scratch according to Soap Box Derby guidelines or purchase a Masters kit to assemble.
This year’s field will have 64 entries: 26 in the Stock division, 26 in Super Stocks, and 12 in the Masters, according to Jim Curtis, president of the Mid-Coast Maine Soap Box Derby. Last year’s event had 28 Stock entries, 35 Super Stock racers and 14 Masters competitors.
Winners in each division from both the Camden and Houlton events qualify to compete in the All-American Soap Box Derby to be held July 26-31 at Derby Downs in Akron.
Other Maine Soap Box Derby events were held in Rumford on June 12 and Brewer last Saturday.
