Calmus hurls ‘Jacks to 4th win in row

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The Bangor Lumberjacks won their fourth straight game thanks to a complete-game effort Friday night from pitcher Lance Calmus, his second of the season and third in the last four games for Bangor hurlers.

Bangor scored six unanswered runs after Elmira scored in the first to take a 6-2 decision over the Pioneers in Northeast League action.

“I thought about not sending him out for the ninth because we had a guy ready, but he was getting stronger as the game wore on,” said Bangor manager Kash Beauchamp.

Calmus struck out seven batters and walked none en route to an eight-hit effort.

The Lumberjacks evened their record at 14-14 overall while Elmira fell to 7-19.

“We seem to be putting it all together and doing the little things,” Beauchamp said. “We had one baserunning mistake when one of our guys tried to steal third and got thrown out, but our pitching and our defense have been really good.”

Elmira took a 2-0 lead in the first on Jeremy Dodson’s sixth home run of the season. Bangor halved Elmira’s lead in the fourth when Rolando Bello scored from second on a Donnie Ross hit-and-run single to left.

Bangor tied the game in the eighth, when Brad Hargreaves led off with a double, moved to third on a bunt, and scored on Shin Uchino’s single up the middle through a drawn-in infield.

Bangor scored four runs in the ninth. The first run scored on a bases-loaded squeeze bunt by Hargreaves, and Paul Powell knocked in two more with a single. Uchino’s RBI single capped the scoring.
