SULLIVAN – A motorcyclist from North Oxford, Mass., was the victim in a fatal accident Friday on U.S. Route 1, authorities said Sunday.
Thomas G. Anctil, 48, was riding a 1987 Harley-Davidson motorcycle east on the highway around 6:40 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a westbound 1998 Jeep sport utility vehicle driven by Kim M. Stuart, 47, of Sullivan, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
Stuart had drifted off the right of the road and overcorrected, causing her vehicle to cross the centerline of the highway and into the eastbound lane, the statement indicated. After colliding, the vehicles went off the road and the Jeep hit a tree.
Anctil suffered massive head and internal injuries in the collision and died at the scene, according to police. Stuart was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth for treatment and released.
Stuart was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and air bags in her vehicle deployed, police indicated.
Anctil was one of three motorcyclists traveling in a group when the collision occurred near the intersection with Ashville Road. The accident remains under investigation and will be reconstructed by Lt. Patrick Kane of the Sheriff’s Department.
