BANGOR – A man from Washington state is facing federal charges after being arrested Friday in Gouldsboro.

Anthony Wayne Robinson, 41, has been charged with interstate violation of a protection order in U.S. District Court in Bangor. A detention hearing is scheduled Friday for Robinson, who is being held at the Penobscot County Jail.

Robinson is under a protection order dated May 28 by a Tacoma, Wash., judge that forbids him to have contact with his wife as a condition of his sentence for assaulting her. He also has been convicted there of assaulting a child, according to court documents.

Law enforcement officials in Maine were alerted by Robinson’s father-in-law that he was in Hancock County with his wife and children.

Charles Brewer learned that his daughter and grandchildren were in Maine with Robinson when an employee of Stinson’s Canning Factory in Gouldsboro called him for a reference.

After giving his daughter a good reference, Brewer called Detective Steve McFarland of the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office in Ellsworth, according to the affidavit filed in federal court.

The couple and their children had been staying at a campground in Trenton, according to court documents.

If convicted of the federal charge, Robinson could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Robinson also could face additional charges in state court in Tacoma. Law enforcement officials there have said it is unlikely the state would extradite him.
