Robicheau’s patience key, Brewer tips rival Bangor

BREWER – Joe Robicheau had an adventurous evening at the plate Tuesday night, and it ended triumphantly without him even swinging the bat.

The Bucksport High product drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to force home the winning run, lifting Brewer to an 8-7 victory over previously unbeaten Bangor in an American Legion Zone 1 baseball battle at Heddericg Field.

Brewer (6-1) scored the winning run without hitting the ball out of the infield. Mitchell Peasley was hit by a Keith Nason pitch with one out, and Jeff Miller walked. Zac Bouzan-Kaloustian beat out a chopper to shortstop to load the bases, and after Kevin McAvoy popped out, Robicheau walked on four pitches to end the game.

“Coach [David Morris] just told me to be patient,” Robicheau said. “I was going to let him throw me a strike.”

Earlier in the game, Robicheau’s plate appearances produced mixed results.

He hit a two-run single to key a four-run Brewer rally in the fourth after Bangor opted to intentionally walk the previous batter, McAvoy, to load the bases with two outs. Robicheau grounded a 1-0 pitch into center field to break a 3-3 tie.

“I just needed to get up there, concentrate and get a base hit,” said Robicheau, who scored later in the inning on a double-steal as Brewer extended its lead to 7-3.

The adventure continued two innings later, after McAvoy reached on an error with one out. McAvoy tried to steal second on the next pitch, but when Robicheau swung and missed, his momentum carried him into the path of Bangor catcher P.J. Dowe, whose throw to second sailed into right-center field.

Robicheau was called out for an obstruction, and McAvoy was sent back to first and eventually did not score a run that would have broken a 7-7 tie.

For that, the Witches had to wait another inning.

“They gave us some breaks that we took advantage of, and we gave them some breaks,” said Morris.

Brewer (6-1) never trailed, but Bangor twice rallied to the tie the game, the final time at 7-7 with a four-run rally in the sixth. The Comrades loaded the bases with one out against Brewer’s Andrew Patterson on two walks – one intentional – and a single by Nate Hall. Jordan Heath drove home a run with a liner that caromed off Patterson’s glove, another run scored on an error and Phil Cayford tied the game with a two-out single to center.

“We had some good at-bats late in the game when we were down 7-3,” said Bangor coach Jay Kemble. “We just made too many mental mistakes tonight.”

Each team pounded out 11 hits. Bouzan-Kaloustian had a double and two singles, while Robicheau had two singles and three RBIs and Kevin Kotredes also singled twice.

Bangor (7-1) got six runs and six hits from its 7-8-9 hitters. Mike Larochelle hit a two-run double and a single, while Dowe and Hall each had two singles.

McAvoy’s two-run homer to left gave Brewer a 2-0 first-inning lead, and Bouzan-Kaloustian singled home Kotredes an inning later to make it 3-0.

Brian Hackett singled home Larochelle in the third, and Larochelle doubled home Dowe and Hall in the fourth to rally Bangor to a 3-3 tie.
