Bangor

Lending excellence

USDA Rural Development on June 24 presented Bangor Savings Bank with an award for excellence at the G. Clifton Eames Training Center.

Since the inception of the guaranteed housing program in 1991, Bangor Savings Bank has made 472 guaranteed loans with Rural Development totaling nearly $27 million.

Shane Goettle, acting associate administrator for USDA Rural Housing Programs, presented the award to John A. Moore, senior vice president of Bangor Savings Bank.

Michael Aube, state director for USDA Rural Development, said that Bangor Savings Bank has made great strides in reaching out to those borrowers in need of these programs.

Child Development Services

Maribeth Barney joined Child Development Services-Penobscot County as executive director on April 5. She brings 25 years of experience working on behalf of children and families in Maine.

She began her career as a Head Start teacher and director for Penquis CAP in 1977. She holds a master’s degree in special education and an advanced study certificate from the University of Maine. She is completing a program in psychology at the University of Southern Maine.

Barney’s career has included posts as special education director and administrator in Aroostook County schools, managing special purpose preschool programs and managing a group home for the Aroostook Mental Health Center.

Chef conclave

The cooking talents of Sunbury Village chef Albert LaVigne were recognized recently when he was selected to attend Holiday Retirement Corp.’s 2004 Chef Conclave in New York. He was one of 33 chefs chosen from more than 280 Holiday chefs at retirement residences in the United States, Canada and England.

LaVigne was nominated to attend by his peers and superiors because of his exemplary performance at Sunbury Village, officials said, including resident satisfaction, on-budget operations and maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen.

Child care business training

The Penquis CAP Resource Development Center is offering a training session, “Developing Your Family Child Care Business,” 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Aug. 3-31, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St.

The 30-hour training program, developed by the Marion Ewing Kauffman Foundation, will help child care providers think and act like business owners.

Registration fee for the class is $10 and is not refundable. Scholarships are available. To register, call 973-3533 by Friday, July 23. Registration fee may be mailed to Penquis CAP RDC, 262 Harlow St., Bangor ME 04401.

Medical student housing

Ground will be broken July 1 for Eastern Maine Medical Center medical student housing, which will be funded by money raised from a capital campaign. The dormitory will house as many as 16 students at a time, and will be located on property EMMC already owns on Spruce Street.

Currently, medical students are housed in former patient rooms at EMMC or at locations some distance from the hospital.

EMMC is a teaching hospital for medical students from throughout the United States. Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford are the hospital’s primary affiliates.

Each year, more than 150 students come to EMMC to do rotations in pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, family practice, surgery and psychiatry.

Scissor Excitement in Bangor is now offering innovative imaging consultation using software that allows clients to see how they would look with a computer-simulated hairstyle.

Starting a business basics

Women, Work and Community will hold a workshop, “The Basics of Starting a Business,” 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday, July 15 and 22, and Tuesday, July 27, at 216 Texas Ave. Topics covered include assessing your skills for business, the business plan outline, marketing and cash flow.

Workshop sponsors are Maine Centers for Women, Women, Work and Community, and the Women’s Business Center at Coastal Enterprises Inc.
