World War II veterans

BANGOR – World War II veterans will lead off the Fourth of July parade, gathering at 10:30 a.m. on the lawn by the municipal pool on Wilson Street in Brewer.

First Student will provide two buses for veterans who would like to ride in the parade. The buses also will carry marching veterans from the end of the parade route back to their cars in Brewer.

Parking for charity

Shaw’s Supermarket is betting that its proximity to Bangor’s waterfront fireworks display will morph into cash to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems. The donations will be earmarked for children who are cancer patients at Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Shaw’s will ask for a donation from those who park in their Main Street lot from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 4.

A barbecue fund-raiser also will be held 5:30-9:30 p.m. outside the store.

Westgate parade

Residents and staff at Westgate Manor will hold an Independence Day parade at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, July 1, in the enclosed garden. Parade participants will gather in front of the facility at 10:15 a.m.

The Penobscot Wind Ensemble will head up the parade and more than 100 people will participate, including children from local day care centers, Boy Scouts, therapy dogs and clowns.

Spinal cord injury group

Certified personal trainer and physical therapist Lance Reardon will be the speaker at the next meeting of the Spinal Cord Injury Support Group at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at Alpha One, 1048 Union St.

Reardon has worked extensively with wheelchair-bound patients and clients while employed at Eastern Maine Medical Center and at an area fitness center. He also has experience in weightlifting, organizing and participating in local competitions. His comments will focus on long-range health and wellness as well as physical conditioning.

The SCI Support Group welcomes those with all levels of spinal cord injury. Also welcome to attend and participate are spouses, parents and other relatives, friends and professionals in related fields. The group meets monthly and hears from guest speakers as well as discussing varying topics of interest.

Summer sports camps

The Orono Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registrations for:

. Fundamental basketball school. The girls school runs July 12-16, and the boys school July 19-23. Grades three through five will meet 8:30 a.m.-noon, and grades six through eight will meet 1-4 p.m. The school is taught by local varsity coaches, players and educators who are selected for their ability to work with developing basketball players. Participants receive a T-shirt, video analysis, report card and more. The fee is $75. For information, contact Orono Rec at 866-5065.

. Major League Soccer Camp to run the week of July 26-30. The camp for children ages 5 and up is run by coaches from Great Britain and other European countries. Campers receive a ball and T-shirt. Several sessions are offered, depending on age. For information, contact Orono Rec at 866-5065.

. Grand Slam Softball Clinic, 9-11 a.m. July 19-23. Orono High School Varsity Softball Coach Michelle Grindle will teach the finer points of hitting, fielding and pitching. The clinic is for all levels of players ages 7 to 12. The fee is $30 for Orono residents, $40 for others. For information, contact Orono Rec at 866-5065.

Orrington

Shortcake festival

A Strawberry Shortcake Festival will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road.

The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for kids 12 and under. Proceeds will be used to construct a new swing set and purchase basketball hoops for the church. This is the Eagle Scout project of Kyle Allcroft of Orrington.
