Bangor High School

BANGOR – Nathaniel Goodell has been selected as this year’s male Presidential Scholar from Maine. Each year as many as 141 students are chosen from a national pool of high academic achievers. One male and one female from each state are selected. Academic success is only one criterion in the selection process.

Additional students are selected as Presidential Scholars in the Arts.

During the week of June 20, Goodell traveled to Washington with Stephen Godsoe, head of the Bangor High School math department. Goodell was awarded the Presidential Scholar medal and attended several recognition events while he and Godsoe were in Washington.

Goodell named Godsoe as an outstanding teacher who had a great influence on the success of his Presidential Scholar essay. Godsoe also was honored in the ceremonies.

The female Presidential Scholar is Erin Baggott of Manchester. She is a student at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Colleges

American University

WASHINGTON – Matthew Pare, the son of Richard and Nancy Pare of Orono, received a master’s degree in psychology during commencement ceremonies at American University.

Bentley College

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley College has named Elissa Bosley of Bangor, Michael Desmarais of Hampden and Zachary Means of Orono to the spring dean’s list.

Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK – Joshua Atwood received a bachelor’s degree in biology and environmental studies during commencement exercises held at Bowdoin College on May 29.

While at Bowdoin, Atwood worked at the Bowdoinham Elementary School with the America Reads Project. He instituted a mentoring program in which Bowdoin students volunteer time at the elementary school.

Atwood also taught an environmental education class to fourth-graders at Longfellow School in Brunswick. That class made a public service announcement that airs on television in southern Maine.

Atwood recently received a Distinguished Community Service Award from the department of environmental studies at Bowdoin College.

Atwood is the son of Randal and Debra Atwood of Hampden, and a graduate of Hampden Academy.

Central Connecticut State University

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Michael Karnas III received a bachelor’s degree in sociology during commencement exercises May 22 at Central Connecticut State University.

A 2000 graduate of Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, Karnas is the son of Michael and Linda Karnas of Brewer.

Colby College

RINDGE, N.H. – Justine Dill of Corinth, Derek Rodgerson of Newburgh and Thomas Waterman of Bangor received bachelor’s degrees during commencement exercises June 17 at Franklin Pierce College. Dill also was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester.

Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE – Patrick Gladu of Orrington received a bachelor’s degree during commencement ceremonies May 3 at Maine Maritime Academy. Gladu is a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Michael Pare, son of Richard and Nancy Pare of Orono, received a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

Stonehill College

EASTON, Mass. – Mikel Loretta Kearns of Orrington has been named to the spring dean’s list at Stonehill College.

University College

BANGOR – Jennifer Robicheau, an employee of Bangor Dental Clinic, graduated summa cum laude from University College of Bangor on May 8.

She earned the following awards: Baccalaureate Degree Student of the Year, Dental Hygiene Baccalaureate Degree Student of the Year and Presidential Achievement Award.

University of Maine

ORONO – Joshua Kochis of Brewer, a University of Maine student, is the recipient of a scholarship from the Hannaford Charitable Foundation. He is the son of Janet and Alan Kochis.

ORONO – Sarah Bishop, the daughter of Reginald and Priscilla Bishop, graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and international affairs-economics May 8 at the University of Maine.

She studied abroad in Spain and will continue her education in economics and Spanish this fall at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s Senior Companion Program is the recipient of a $500 grant from Bangor Wal-Mart.

The Senior Companion Program is a national community service program providing older Americans with opportunities to volunteer. Age 60 or older, senior companions provide companionship to homebound or isolated elders in the communities.

The purpose of the program is to reduce loneliness and isolation, and to help homebound individuals maintain their independence.

More than 100 senior volunteers are involved in the program, which serves more than 500 people in 13 Maine counties.

University of Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Joseph Belisle of Bangor graduated May 16 from the University of Rochester. He received a bachelor’s degree in political science and psychology.

University of Southern Maine

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Heather Blier Alvarez has earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where she specialized in work with children and families.

Alvarez received many honors and national awards, including a research award from the Melissa Institute for Violence and Violence Prevention. She also has published several articles and book chapters.

Alvarez attended Hermon High School 1989-1993 and graduated magna cum laude from Colby College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Psi Chi national honor societies.

She accepted a psychiatric research training position at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital. After graduate studies she completed her residency at the University of Florida.

Alvarez, the daughter of Alan and Susan Blier of Hermon, will move with her husband, Jason, to Athens, Ohio, where she has accepted a faculty position in psychology at Ohio University.
