OLD TOWN – The Trenton Acadians were so impressive Thursday, even a deer came out of the woods to check them out.

What Bambi saw as she lingered just beyond the outfield fence during the second inning of play at Old Town High School was one of two eight-run rallies that carried Trenton to a 17-0 victory over the Orono Twins.

The Acadians (6-2) pounded out 15 hits – including three home runs and three doubles – in rebounding from a loss Tuesday at Calais.

First baseman Arshwin Asjes doubled and singled twice with three RBIs, while catcher Harrison Hines homered, doubled and drove in four runs for Trenton.

Third baseman Adam Cousins and winning pitcher Collin Henry also had two hits each, with Cousins and Nick Ciomei each contributing a solo homer.

“We’ve been hitting the ball, but not with this much power,” said Hines, one of a large contingent of Acadians from two-time defending Class C state champion George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill.

Henry combined with Cory Smith and Will Rosenthal on a three-hit shutout. The left-handed Henry worked the first four innings – escaping a pair of bases-loaded jams along the way – while Smith and Rosenthal held 4-5 Orono hitless over the final three innings.

Trenton also played errorless defense, highlighted by diving catches from outfielders Ciomei, Andy Pooler and Tony Conroy.

Ciomei, the left fielder, made the game’s biggest play, racing to the gap in left-center to rob George Keefe of extra bases with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third. Right fielder Conroy took a hit from Brian Roach an inning later, and center fielder Pooler denied Jarrett Lukas a hit with a successful dive to open the Orono fifth.

“I think each one fed off the other,” said Trenton coach Matt Haney. “Nick made a great catch, at a huge point in the game. We were up 9-0, but if that had gone by him, it could have been 9-3 and this is a small ballpark, so who knows what could have happened.”

Cousins, the second batter of the game, took a 1-0 pitch from Orono starter Ryan Levesque over the left-field fence to give Trenton a 1-0 lead.

The Acadians broke the game open an inning later, sending 13 batters to the plate. Mark Clapp had a two-run single, Henry hit a two-run double and scored as Asjes singled to center, and Hines capped off the rally with a first-pitch three-run homer.

Trenton scored eight more runs in the fifth. Ciomei, a Deer Isle-Stonington product, led off with a home run, and Asjes and David Muise followed with two-run singles to go with an RBI double by Hines and a run-scoring single by Kyle Shea. Conroy also plated a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

“That’s the first time all year we’ve put all three aspects – hitting, pitching and defense – together in the same game,” said Haney.

Dusty Thomas had Orono’s lone extra-base hit, a third-inning double. Cory Estes and Keefe had back-to-back singles in the second.
