Unlike Red Sox, NESN TV ratings topping the charts

The Boston Red Sox may not be making their fans very happy these days, but they’re putting big smiles on the faces of New England Sports Network officials.

NESN recorded its highest household rating for any event in the regional television sports network’s 20-year history Wednesday night with a 13.8 household rating in the Boston DMA (designated market area) for the telecast of Boston’s game against the Yankees in New York. NESN’s coverage peaked at the 9 p.m. quarter hour at 17.2.

A rating is the persons estimate expressed as a percent of the population and a single ratings point represents the one percent watching a particular program at a particular time.

NESN’s previous highest rating was a 13.4 for a Red Sox win over New York on May 26 last year. Red Sox baseball on NESN is currently averaging an 8.8 household rating through 57 games (through Wednesday) in the Boston DMA, according to a NESN press release. That represents a 26 percent increase over last season’s average rating of 7.0 after the same number of games

Due to technical difficulties…

The Lighthouse Sports Network – a two-radio station partnership which airs all of the Bangor Lumberjacks’ home games on four radio frequencies – is still one frequency short due to some technical troubles.

The network, which planned to air Lumberjacks games on primary stations WHCF (88.5 FM) in Bangor and WHMX (105.7) in Lincoln as well as translator stations in Presque Isle (102.7 FM) and Waterville (100.5 FM), has not been able to air games on the Waterville translator station yet.

Wayne Frost, the general manager at WHMX and WHCF, says station personnel are still working on the engineering problems which have caused the delay in getting 100.5 FM – which serves the entire greater Waterville area.

“We hope to have it resolved in a couple of weeks, but it could be longer,” Frost said.

The Lighthouse Radio Network is broadcasting all 52 regular season Lumberjacks games as well as any playoff games.

Let’s go to the replay

The Golf Channel will broadcast coverage of the U.S. Women’s Open Tuesday, July 6 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. The replay will be of the final round of the Open, which was played July 4 at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass. No Mainers are scheduled to take part in the tournament, but some of the top professionals and amateurs are entered in the field.
