A four-vehicle accident in Brewer was triggered Friday evening when a 13-year-old girl backed her mother’s car out of a driveway onto North Main Street, according to police.

The girl backed her mother’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo out onto North Main Street at an estimated 20 to 30 mph and struck a northbound Dodge Grand Caravan, according to Officer Rich Smith of the Brewer Police Department.

A passenger in the van, a 9-year-old girl, was brought to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor because of pain in her rib area.

The Grand Caravan was pushed into the southbound lane when hit by the Monte Carlo, striking the side of a rented southbound Toyota Prius. A motorcycle traveling north behind the Grand Caravan was involved in the accident as well. The driver of the motorcycle was not seriously injured.

The teen girl, whose name was not released, was charged with driving without a license.

Traffic was stopped on North Main Street for more than an hour. A few residents stood down the road from the accident, diverting traffic around the area.

A Castine man was charged with theft and operating with a suspended license Thursday after he and a female companion left a Brewer Rite Aid without paying for $30 worth of items, police said.

Officer Anthony Pinette of the Brewer Police Department responded to a call from a Rite Aid employee claiming that a man and woman left the store without paying for several items after the two had a verbal argument. The Rite Aid employee said the man had tried to pay for the items with his debit card, which was denied. The man then allegedly left the store with the items and drove away in a gray vehicle with Vermont plates.

Pinette found a vehicle matching that description parked at Twin City Motor Inn in Brewer. Pinnette found Michael Vogell, 30, and Jiselle Turner, 24, in the room adjacent to the parked car. He found the stolen items in the vehicle, and charged Vogell with theft. Vogell also had a suspended license, according to Pinette’s report, and was charged with operating with a suspended license.

Pinette also found a prescribed pill in the car, which Turner claimed was hers. She could not provide proof of her prescription, according to reports. Pinette charged Turner with possession of a Schedule Z drug.
