BANGOR – A Winterport man was charged with operating without a license, failing to give his correct name and operating an unregistered motor vehicle Saturday night after he was pulled over for driving without his headlights on.

Officer Robert Angelo of the Bangor Police Department pulled over a 2000 Honda Civic on Grove Street after following it for 75 yards without its headlights on. The driver said he did not have his ID and gave a name that later turned out to be false, according to Angelo. Angelo checked on the name the driver gave and found there was a warrant issued for the arrest of the person with that name.

Returning to the vehicle, Angelo asked the driver if he would give him a wallet he saw on the floor of the back seat, according to reports. Angelo said the driver denied that the wallet belonged to him. After Angelo opened the wallet, he found an ID bearing the name Travis Wittlesey, 21, of Winterport. The driver then admitted the ID was his.

Wittlesey’s passenger, a 16-year-old female, was very intoxicated, according to Angelo’s report. She was taken to the Bangor police station, where her parents were called.

Wittlesey admitted to being on probation. Angelo said that the registration Wittlesey gave him belonged to a Ford van. Angelo called the owner of the vehicle who admitted the car was not registered.

The vehicle was towed. Wittlesey’s probation officer requested that he be held at Penobscot County Jail until July 6.
