HERMON – For St. Albans’ Rick Morse and Hermon’s Kris Watson, the night of July 3, 2004, will always be cherished.
For the first time in their careers, Morse and Watson each collected two feature wins in one day.
Due to rainouts, there were three makeup features at Speedway 95 before the fireworks display and regular racing card. Morse captured the 50-lap limited makeup and then the regular feature while the 24-year-old Watson duplicated Morse’s feat in the truck division.
There were also two pro stock features with Winterport’s Ryan Deane capturing the makeup event before wrecking in the later feature, which was won in impressive fashion by Winterport’s Patrick Thibodeau.
Brent Parritt of Steuben continued his thorough domination of the super street class as the 29-year-old collected his seventh consecutive triumph. The second- and third-place finishers were a combined 138 years old: 65-year-old Kenny Bowness of Glenburn and 73-year-old Clarence Suydam of Milbridge.
It was their best finishes of the season.
“It was good to see these guys up here. They’ve got a lot of experience,” said Parritt as the three received their trophies.
“He’s a hard man to beat,” said Bowness about Parritt.
“I’ve had a real good car all year and it was real good again tonight,” said Parritt.
Suydam said he was “very happy” with his third.
“I’ve been shooting for this all year long,” grinned Suydam.
Randy Caler of Cherryfield and Mike Overlock of Franklin finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Watson had a sense of relief with his double win.
“We’ve been a long ways off most of the year. I think we’ve got it dialed in now,” said Watson.
Morse said his car was “pretty loose” in the 50-lap makeup feature before they put on a new right rear tire before the regular feature.
“That made quite a difference. The car was pretty decent,” said Morse.
In both races, Morse managed to hold off his nephew, 23-year-old Greg Morse, who is also from St. Albans.
“I’ll take a second any time behind him. He has taught me a lot about racing. I learn a lot just by following him and watching the lines he runs,” said Greg Morse. “I thought I might get him in the second race, but the lapped traffic took away the outside groove.”
“He’ll whup my butt one of these days. He’s a great kid. He’s doing a great job,” said the proud uncle.
In the 50-lap makeup, Stockton Springs’ Duane Seekins followed the Morses across the finish line with Hudson’s Mike Thayer and Hermon’s Scott Modery rounding out the top five.
In the second limited feature, Modery was third followed by Seekins and Erik Worster of Lee.
In the two truck features, the top five finishers were the same: Watson, Oakland’s Hugh Doucette, Orrington’s John Kalel II, Kenduskeag’s Clarence McCullough, and Hermon’s Mike Hopkins.
In the pro stock features, points leader Andy Saunders of Ellsworth, winner of five of the first six races, wound up second in both to pad his lead.
Following Deane and Saunders in the first feature were Corinna’s Paul White, Thibodeau, and Don Alexander Jr. of Carmel.
In the second pro stock race, completing the top five behind Thibodeau and Saunders were Town Hill’s John Phippen, Stetson’s Gary Bellefleur, and Corinth’s Lloyd Nickerson.
It was Thibodeau’s first win in his sixth race with his new car, which also happens to be for sale.
“This is the best it’s been [run],” said Thibodeau.
In the other features, Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder won the sport four race followed by Newburgh’s Darrin Durrell, Bangor’s Jason Witts, Greenville’s Colin Arey II, and Jesse Smith of Carmel. Corinna’s Andy Migliore won the strictly street race followed by Glenburn’s Jordon Pearson, Levant’s Joe Allen, Clifton’s Jim Carr Jr., and Dixmont’s Garrit McKee. Points leader Bob Leighton of Milford captured the Super Cup (half-size Nextel Cup cars) race in his Kevin Harvick replica followed by John Higgins of Glenburn, Francis Bernard of Howland, Nick Higgins of Milford, and Gerry Phillips of Hermon.
