Applebee’s Sub 5 series nearing halfway mark Cake leads men’s standings; Bell pacing women

The Applebee’s Sub 5 Race Series is only five races old, and like the weather at this past weekend’s Walter Hunt Memorial, the points race is just starting to heat up.

Five out of 11 races are in the series are in the books, with the next series race set for Saturday, July 24th, with the Fort Knox Bay Festival 5K in Bucksport.

The top five on the men’s side are all within striking distance of each other.

Judson Cake of Bar Harbor, who won the Tour du Lac 10-miler a week and a half ago, currently leads the series with 30 points. Bangor’s Phil LeBreton (24 points), Newell Lewey of Veazie (22) and Jeremy Lisee (17) of Milbridge lurk close behind.

It could very well come down to the final race, the Brewer 5K Turkey Trot, to find out who captures the crown.

On the women’s side, Kathleen Bell of Orono has racked up 35 points as of the Tour du Lac race but Cassie Hintz of Stillwater is lurking in the background.

Hintz, who will be a junior at Old Town High School in the fall, has won the series’ last two races, and sits in second place with 28 points. Margaret Jones of Bucksport holds third with 17 while Becky Flowers of Massachusetts and Harborside’s Susannah Beck are tied with 10 points each.

To be eligible for an award at the end of the season, runners must complete at least five of the series races. Awards are presented to runners in age groups, including 29-under, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-over.
