BANGOR – A 4-inch water main broke Wednesday night in front of The Grasshopper Shop on Main Street.

Water District officials got the call around 8:30 p.m. Water was flowing over the sidewalk and into the street, but the water posed no threat to traffic.

Water was flowing out of two spots on the ground. One spot was on the sidewalk, the other was a point a few feet away in some mulch next to a small bush.

Water District officials said they did not think any damage would be done to the basements of adjacent buildings. An employee of the Whig and Courier said the restaurant’s basement was unaffected by the broken main.
