Bangor

Class of 1984 reunion

The Class of 1984, Bangor High School, will hold its 20th year class reunion Saturday Aug. 14. Reunion festivities will kick off Friday night. Call Shawna Michael Allen at 469-9913 to obtain more information or to share news of, and addresses for, classmates.

195th Army Band

Bangor’s own 195th Army National Guard band will present a mix of traditional and contemporary music at 7 p.m. Friday, July 9, at the Bangor Public Library. The concert is free. To obtain more information, call 947-8336.

Film festival

The Maine International Film Festival and River City Cinema Society will partner to bring two films to Bangor Opera House on July 10.

“Parallel Lines” will be shown at 4:30 p.m., followed by a discussion with filmmaker Nina Davenport. Tickets are $8.

“An Evening with Ed Harris” will begin at 8 p.m., including a selection from one of the actor’s films. Tickets are $10.

Tickets may be purchased at BookMarc’s, Epic Sports and Borders.

Nature talk

Hope Brogunier, a Field’s Pond Nature Center educator, will talk about things that go on all around us in the natural world on a summer’s day. She will be at the library at 10 a.m. Friday, July 9. To obtain more information about library programs, call 947-8336.

Noir beneath the Stars

Beginning Friday, July 9, “Noir beneath the Stars” will be sponsored free by River City Cinema at sunset at Pickering Square. Bring your own lawn chair and see these movies:

People of North Cyprus

Author and photographer Dr. Trudy Irene Scee, whose exhibit of photographs, “Everyday Prisoners: The People of North Cyprus,” will be on display at Bangor Public Library during July, will speak about the crisis in Cyprus at 4 p.m. Monday, July 12, at the library.

Dr. Scee has visited North Cyprus many times. She has interviewed ordinary citizens of both rural and urban Cyprus, and the Turkish president and prime minister.

Maiden voyage

The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau invites the public to join them at 2 p.m. Friday, July 9, to welcome the inaugural voyage of the American Cruise Lines’ American Glory.

American Cruise Lines began coming to Bangor after they experienced bad weather and could not dock at Belfast.

Last summer, staff and volunteers of the convention and visitors bureau greeted the cruise ship whenever it put into Bangor, provided passengers with information, provided historians for the cruise from Bangor to Bucksport, left small gifts in each cabin and provided Bangor brownies and root beer to passengers as they left the ship after their cruise.

A welcome ceremony will include presentation of the key to the city, representatives from the offices of Sen. Olympia Snowe, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud and Sen. Susan Collins, music and a ribbon cutting.

Brewer

Brewer Kiwanis meetings

The Brewer Kiwanis Club, which meets at 6 p.m. for about an hour the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month, will move its meeting place to the Muddy Rudder restaurant effective July 14.

The group is looking for new members and has an open enrollment coming up.

Kiwanis members participate in fun and fellowship, develop business contacts through networking opportunities, better the lives of children and build enduring friendships through service to others.

Those interested are welcome to show up, order from the menu and find out about Brewer Kiwanis.

Bucksport

Rhythm, Rubbish, Recycle

Gateway Arts for Kids will sponsor Rhythm, Rubbish, Recycle at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at Miles Lane School. Youngsters will make instruments with Skip LaPlante after the show.

Blessing of the Boats

All boaters are invited to participate in the Blessing of the Boats at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at the Bucksport waterfront.

The Rev. Linda Smith of Elm Street Congregational Church will give the blessing from the bow of the Wind Horse research vessel captained by Philip Rosen. Boats should assemble near the marina between 10:30 and 10:50 a.m. in order to sail past the Wind Horse beginning at 11 a.m.

Spectators, boaters on shore leave and landlubbers are invited to participate by viewing the boats and nautical gear offered by Stanley Marine, Port Harbor Marine and Hamilton Marine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the town landing.

Entertainment will be provided by Gail Ledford, and food will be available from Giosia’s Restaurant and other nearby purveyors of good things to eat. Karaoke opportunities will be available.

Clifton

Microscope workshops

Clifton Public Library will host Seeing the World through Microscopes workshops for grades two through eight during July.

During the two-hour workshops, pupils will use microscopes to examine items they collect. Workshop size is limited to 10 students, and preregistration is required. To sign up, call Ruth Perry at 843-5132.

The workshops will be held at the library, 135 Airline Road. The cost is $5, and microscopes will be provided by the Maine Science Lady.

The schedule is:

. Grades four and three, 9:30-11:30 a.m. July 14.

. Grades two and three, 1-3 p.m. July 14.

. Grades five and six, 9:30-11:30 a.m. July 28.

Orrington

Shortcake festival

A Strawberry Shortcake Festival will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at East Orrington Congregational Church, 38 Johnson Mill Road.

The cost is $4 for adults, $2 for kids 12 and under. Proceeds will be used to construct a new swing set and purchase basketball hoops for the church. This is the Eagle Scout project of Kyle Allcroft of Orrington.

Maine Junior Miss

Katee Stearns, 17, Maine Junior Miss, represented the state during the month of June in pre-final activities, then again July 3 in the America’s Junior Miss National Finals on PAX TV.

The daughter of Karen Stearns of Orrington, Katee Stearns attended John Bapst Memorial High School where she was in a variety of activities. She also volunteered in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.
