WEST HAVEN ,Conn. – Derry Hammond’s two-run double highlighted a four-run third inning that propelled the Bangor Lumberjacks to a 6-3 Northeast League victory over the New Haven County Cutters Wednesday night.

The win moved the Lumberjacks into third place in the North Division. The ‘Jacks return home to face the North Shore Spirit of Lynn, Mass., for four games followed by three more home games against the Brockton (Mass.) Rox to complete the first half of the season.

Jake Whitesides opened the Bangor fourth with a home run, and Jose Garcia capped the scoring in that inning with an RBI fielder’s choice.

Bangor added a run in the fifth when Rolando Bello singled in Tim Baywal, who had doubled, and the Lumberjacks completed their scoring on Mark Burke’s RBI double in the ninth.

New Haven scored first when Jose Mateo singled, moved to third on Jimmy Hurst’s single, and came home on a passed ball.

The Cutters added single runs in the third and fourth on Hector Lebron’s RBI fielder’s choice and P.J. Johnston’s RBI single to cut Bangor’s lead to 4-3, but they could get no closer.

Laine McKeller (2-1) picked up the win with 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Isaac Pavlik earned his second save.

Hammond finished with a double and single, and Brad Hargreaves, Donnie Ross, and Bello each singled twice.

For the Cutters, Johnston had three singles and Mateo two. Starter Wes Mindigal (1-1) took the loss.
