Orono library to kick-start girls tech club hoping to direct female technology use

ORONO – What do teen and ‘tween girls like to do the most? Talk? Zoey’s Room was created specifically with their gabby natures in mind.

Zoey’s Room is an interactive Web site and an after-school technology club for girls of middle school age.

The Orono Public Library will serve as the host for a presentation of Zoey’s Room at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, to show parents and people in the community how much fun technology can be in the hands of creative girls.

Girls get bored easily with traditional computer classes and eventually that hurts them in the long run, said officials, when the majority of good paying jobs using technology and computers go to men. But research has shown that girls thrive when they are able to form social groups around a subject.

In Zoey’s Room, they are encouraged to talk their hearts out in a safe, moderated chat room. Not only that, they can gab away in a special chat forum called Ladies Lounge where they may sound off on issues that affect their daily lives. Some of the past topics have included “Does IM Make U Dum?” and “Mean Girls: Hi-Tech Wars.”

This year, Zoey’s Room had a professional New York City videographer and top female executives at Sports Illustrated and E Entertainment chat with the girls.

By drawing girls in slowly, using the kind of technology they are most attracted to, Zoey’s Room builds upon their technological skills. Coinciding with Angus King’s laptop initiative, 24 middle schools in Maine embraced Zoey’s Room last year.
