Schools

John Bapst Memorial High School

BANGOR – Courtney Martin, 17, of Holden is spending two weeks as a Landmark volunteer at Gould Farm in Monterey, Mass. She is a member of a team that will do daily farm chores, work in the gardens and do general maintenance at the facility, which provides treatment for adults with mentally illness.

Martin spent two weeks last year volunteering at Kelmscott Farm in Lincolnville where she helped with farm work, maintained a nature trail and painted fences.

Martin is a member of the National Honor Society at John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor. She runs for the varsity cross country and track team and is a member of the Key Club and the student senate. She also teaches skiing at Sugarloaf USA. She is the daughter of Garrett and Linda Martin of Holden.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Andrea Ahearn of Amherst, a student at Brewer High School, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. Selection is based on superior achievement and top scholarship.

Kent School

KENT, Conn. – Alexander Scott Mitchell graduated from the Kent School in Kent, Conn., on June 6. He is a resident of Glenburn and Rockport, and attended Bangor Christian Schools and Canaan Christian School before acceptance at Kent for his sophomore year.

Mitchell earned a varsity letter in squash, and played baseball and trumpet in the school band. He has begun classes at the University of Maine, where he will join the UM pep band. He also is playing American Legion baseball for Bangor, and has joined the family firm Cencon Corp. as a management trainee.

Literacy grants

BANGOR – Bangor Wal-Mart awarded three literacy grants on July 2. They were presented to Old Town High School, Bangor Adult Education and Hampden Academy.

Scholarship recipients

Area students receiving $2,500 scholarships from Peoples Heritage Bank as part of the Peoples Promise program are: Joel Alex of Old Town, a John Bapst Memorial High School student; Shalis Forti of Bangor, a Bangor High School student; and Eric Young of Brewer, a Brewer High School student.

Ten scholarships were awarded to students throughout Maine.

Scholarship recipients are offered an optional three-month paid internship with Peoples Heritage Bank after their first year of postsecondary education.

William S. Cohen School

BANGOR – The City Council issued a proclamation June 28 citing Zachary Veilleux, a seventh-grader at William S. Cohen School, for his academic achievement and the fact that he has been chosen to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador Program. Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th president of the United States, established the program in 1956.

Veilleux and 42 other Maine students will travel to Australia and New Zealand this summer as part of the student ambassador program.

The proclamation designated Veilleux an official representative of the city of Bangor and charged him with the responsibilities of “experiencing the excitement of travel, the advantages of studying in another part of the world, the joy of cultural discovery, and the creation of memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Berea College scholarship

BEREA, Ken. – Luke Abbott of Holden, a 2004 home-schooled graduate, has been awarded the equivalent of a four-year, $80,000, scholarship at Berea College.

He is the son of Harold and Tamra Abbott of Holden.

Dartmouth College

HANOVER, N.H. – Max I. Brooks graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in English from Dartmouth College. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he is the son of Philip and Astri Brooks.

Sarah Mead has been cited for outstanding academic achievement for the spring semester at Dartmouth College. She is the daughter of Andrew and Kelly Mead.

Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Samantha Kingsbury has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Holy Cross. She is the daughter of Lisa and Douglas Kingsbury of Hampden.

Johnson & Wales University

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The following area students recently graduated from Johnson & Wales University:

. Matthew Cammack of Bangor, who earned an associate degree, summa cum laude, in baking and pastry arts.

. Brooke Rideout of Bangor, who earned a bachelor’s degree in travel and tourism management.

. Amber Alley of Carmel, who earned an associate degree in hotel management.

In addition, Dawn MacDonald of Orono earned an associate degree in culinary arts from the campus in Charleston, S.C., and Shawn Byron of Bangor earned an associate degree in culinary arts and a bachelor’s degree in food service management from the campus in North Miami, Fla.

Liberty University

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Tammy Smith of Bangor recently graduated from Liberty University with a bachelor’s degree in business.

Merrimack College

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Sarah Aylward of Hampden graduated from Merrimack College on May 16.

Aylward and Mallory Brown of Milford were named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the college.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Matthew Whalen has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester in the college of engineering at Northeastern University. He is the son of Cheryl and Michael Whalen of Brewer.

Norwich University

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Joshua Frederik of Hermon graduated from Norwich University May 9.

Pensacola Christian College

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Camara Bragdon, daughter of Randon and Judy Bragdon of Bangor, earned a bachelor’s degree in history during commencement ceremonies May 5 at Pensacola Christian College.

Plymouth State University

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Zachary Cary of Hermon and Megan McLaughlin graduated from Plymouth State University during commencement exercises May 22.

Cynthia Rizza of Winterport was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Plymouth State University.

Presidential Classroom

ORONO – Mary Molnar, a student at the University of Maine, will travel to Washington, D.C., July 10-17 to attend the Presidential Classroom Future World Leaders Summit.

Presidential Classroom, a civic education program, provides college and high school students access to the leaders who shape America’s public policy.

Classroom scholars interact with members of Congress, presidential appointees, senior military officials, top business leaders and journalists. Students will conduct a summit meeting to debate international issues with peers from around the world and will play the World Trade Game.

Rochester Institute of Technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jason Bicknell of Orrington has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at RIT. He is a 2000 graduate of Brewer High School.

Skidmore College

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Josh Keefe was named to the honor roll for the spring semester at Skidmore College. He is the son of Dr. John Keefe and Pamela Pease of Veazie.

Smith College

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Elizabeth Eyerer of Bangor graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in theater from Smith College. She received the Judith Raskin Memorial Prize for outstanding senior student voice and earned highest honors in theater.

A First Group Scholar and member of the dean’s list, she is a graduate of Bangor High School and the daughter of Judy and Rudi Eyerer.

State University of West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Benjamin Preston has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at State University of West Georgia. He is the son of Roy and Patty Preston of Winterport.

University of Maine

ORONO – Travis Hamel of Milford, a junior at the University of Maine Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, received a first place award in the Bentley Education Network student design competition in the animation and freeform-artistic expression category. Hamel’s entry was a 3-D rendering of a 1947 Willys Jeep. Other winners in the competition were from Romania and Singapore.

Hamel is working this summer for UM’s facilities management office producing designs of existing and proposed buildings with MicroStation, an engineering design program produced by Bentley that contestants used for their projects.

In his spare time, Hamel is building a replica of a 1965 Shelby A.C. Cobra convertible and working on his father’s 1928 Model A Woodie.

Hamel is the son of Tom and Nan Hamel of Milford.

Wesleyan University

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Benjamin Schelling of Bangor graduated from Wesleyan University recently. He earned a bachelor’s degree in government. He is the son of George and Joyce Schelling.

Western New England College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Karen Kenneally earned a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Western New England College in May.
