A Corinth man was summoned Saturday after he allegedly struck a man at a Bangor hotel and then drove away while intoxicated.

Richard Benson, 43, of Corinth allegedly told police he hit a Howard Johnson employee in self-defense during an altercation, then left the Odlin Street hotel in his 1998 Nissan, according to police reports.

He was pulled over at 11:09 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 95 north near the Hammond Street exit. Benson’s speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol, according to reports. He reportedly told police he had consumed two drinks at Howard Johnson.

Benson failed field sobriety tests and an Intoxilyzer test later showed his blood alcohol level at 0.16 percent, twice the legal limit, according to reports. He was summoned for operating under the influence.
