WISCASSET – A Waldoboro woman accused in the stabbing death of her husband is scheduled for arraignment Monday in Lincoln County Superior Court.
Amy Dugas, 35, was indicted on Friday by a special grand jury on charges of murder, assault on an officer and violation of conditions of release. The one-day grand jury session was called for Dugas’ case only, Deputy Attorney General Bill Stokes said Monday.
The arraignment tentatively is set for 9 a.m. Monday, a court clerk said Tuesday, but may be changed because of a vacation conflict.
Dugas’ newly appointed attorney is Howard O’Brien of Portland.
Maine State Police began investigating the June 4 stabbing death after being called to a domestic situation at the couple’s Route 32 home in Waldoboro. Police found Mark Dugas, 39, dead on his neighbor’s doorstep.
Last month, Amy Dugas appeared in Superior Court before Justice John Atwood for a bail hearing. Before the stabbing, she had been on release for a February assault involving her husband.
The judge revoked Dugas’ bail for several reasons.
She allegedly consumed alcohol the night her husband was killed. She also is accused of biting Maine State Police Trooper Jason Andrews on the knuckle, leaving teeth marks, while he was arresting her for the bail violation. In addition, she had been ordered to attend anger management counseling, but had attended only one session.
On Feb. 26 – the night Dugas allegedly assaulted her husband in Nobleboro – she also assaulted another law enforcement officer and damaged a cruiser window. In May, she was indicted by a grand jury for assault on an officer, assault, criminal mischief and failure to sign a uniform summons and complaint in connection with the February incident.
During her bail hearing, District Attorney Geoffrey Rushlau called the June 4 circumstances “strikingly similar to the latter part of February” when she was accused of assaulting her husband in Nobleboro.
Police believe the night Mark Dugas was killed the couple had a verbal and physical confrontation before he made his way next door, where he collapsed inside the entryway to his neighbor’s house. Amy Dugas’ 71/2-year-old son was home at the time of the incident.
Dugas still was being held Tuesday at Cumberland County Jail in Portland on $250,000 single-surety or $125,000 cash bail, according to Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett on Tuesday. Should Dugas make bail, she is to have no contact with her son, he said.
