Brewer council accepts forfeited funds

BREWER – After successfully helping prosecute two Penobscot County Superior Court cases, the Brewer Police Department became eligible to receive $1,551 in forfeited funds.

The City Council approved accepting the funds at Tuesday’s council meeting and placed the funds into a newly created asset forfeiture-seizure reserve account.

The account was created in April and allows the Police Department to receive the proceeds from forfeited or seized assets for any law-enforcement-related expenditure.

The council also approved cutting two or three trees on the property of John Salls at 3 Rodney St. to “protect the safety of visitors at the [Oak Hill] cemetery as well as city maintenance personnel working there.”

Two trees and possibly a third small cedar tree will be cut. The trees will be cut after Salls gives permission and signs a waiver of damages.

The council approved alcohol sales by the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3177 at summer horseshoe tournaments set for 12:30-5 p.m. the next 11 Saturdays at 22 Atlantic Ave.

The Eagles Club gained approval to sell beer and wine at its state-approved horseshoe pits located behind the club’s building.

Brookside Grill also gained approval for special alcohol consumption at a cookout on Sept. 5.

During the meeting, the council also approved:

. Purchasing a 2004 Bobcat portable air compressor from Jordan Equipment Co. of Bangor for $9,825.

. Using $5,000 in refunded cable consortium fees to offset the book budget for the Brewer Public Library.

. A street dance for St. Joseph’s Parish on July 17 at 531 North Main St.

. Employment contracts with City Assessor Mary Lynn Hunter and City Clerk Arthur Verow.

. Frank Gallant, Michael Xirinachs, Dana Clark and Robert Boober as members of the solid waste advisory committee.

. Parking restriction for 62 feet on the north side of Mann’s Court, between the roadway and South Main Street.
