Bangor

Sea shanties

Southwest Harbor vocalist Bill Clark will bring songs of the sea to Bangor Public Library 7 p.m. Monday, July 19. A retired park ranger, Clark has served at many of the nation’s historic sites, including Acadia, Cape Hatteras, Salem Maritime and Mystic Seaport Museum. His historic “shanties” or nautical work songs are rhythmic and tuneful. Call the library at 947-8336 for more information.

Zonta garden tour

The ninth annual Zonta Club of Bangor garden tour will be held noon-4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, in seven gardens in Bangor, Orono, Brewer and Carmel.

A perennial and annual plant sale will be held at the Carmel garden.

Tickets are $12 and are available at Johnson Florist and Gift, Airport Mall; and Carden Kennels, 880 Ohio St. For information, call 848-3663.

Youth choir performance

Choeur d’Enfants de Paris, Saint Germain Des Pres and the Youth Choir of Greater Paris, under the direction of Francis Bardot, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at St. Mary’s Church, 768 Ohio St. There is no admission charge for the concert.

Child care training

The Penquis Community Action Program Resource Development Center will offer Promoting the Social-Emotional Competence of Young Children, a 30-hour child care training class from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 26, to Thursday, July 29, at Penquis CAP, 262 Harlow St. Lunch is provided.

There is a $10 registration fee for the class. Current child care providers may apply for reimbursement of the fee. To register, call 973-3533.

Bucksport

Old Grey Goose

Gateway Arts for Kids will sponsor Old Grey Goose, an old-time bluegrass and folk music trio from Freedom, at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Miles Lane School.

Scottish Tattoo

The St. Andrew’s Society of Maine will present Scottish Tattoo, a musical event, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 17, on the grounds of Fort Knox in Prospect.

The activity is based on an outdoor military exercise given by troops as evening entertainment. In the 17th and 18th centuries, in the low countries of Europe, a sentry with a drum was often sent through the streets of a town near which troops were quartered to recall them to their quarters for the night.

Those attending should bring lawn chairs. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12.

Kennel club match

The Coastal Crescent Kennel Club will hold an AKC sanctioned breed and obedience match, rain or shine, at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 18, at the middle field on Miles Lane across from Bucksport High School. Spectators are welcome and admission is free. Refreshments will be available. Call 567-3567 or 469-3852 for more information.

Eddington

Fire department yard sale

The Eddington Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a yard sale 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at the fire station on Route 9. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of uniforms for the town’s firefighters.

Those wishing to donate goods for the yard sale may call Kathy, 843-5426, to arrange for pick up or delivery. A drop-off day will be held 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 17, at the fire station.

Indian Island

HUD grant

The Penobscot Indian Nation recently received a $87,350 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will be used to help construct a six-unit adult family care home.

Old Town

Blood drive

The Old Town Dairy Queen is joining the Maine Blood Center to conduct a blood drive and fund-raiser 2-7 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at the Dairy Queen.

Donors who give blood that day will receive free ice cream, have their names added to a Miracle Cone and receive DQ coupons.

For every unit of blood given, $2 will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.

Canoe Hullabaloo Festival

Canoe Hullabaloo Festival will continue July 15-17 at Old Town’s Riverfront Park. The schedule is:

Friday, July 16

8-10 p.m., Karaoke in the Dark in the Park, open to everyone.

6:30-7:45 p.m., Concert featuring Coconut Groove.

Saturday, July 17

7-11 a.m., Canoe regatta and attempt to break the world record of 777 canoes.

10 a.m., Juried craft and art show on Main Street between Noonan Chiropractic and Canoe City Video and Appliance, across the street from Riverfront Park.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Silent auction at the 3E building across from the Riverfront Park.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chicken barbecue by the Old Town Elks Club.

Noon to 3:30 p.m., Canoe races on the Penobscot River.

1 p.m., Recreational-class canoe race around Indian Island. Check-in begins at noon.

1 p.m., 15-mile canoe race around Marsh Island with five portages and cash prizes. $25 paddler entrance fee. Check-in begins at noon.

2 p.m., Children’s storyteller Jennifer Armstrong.

6-7 p.m., Concert featuring Lidral Duo.

7 p.m., Canoe auction and announcement of the painted-paddle winners, community canoe raffles, followed by closing remarks and the Penobscot Closing Blessing.

Orono

90th birthday

Anna R. Greenlaw, formerly of Island Falls and born in Fort Fairfield, celebrated her 90th birthday April 17 at Orono Commons. Anna’s family and friends were with her on her special day.

They shared stories and cards from people who couldn’t attend the celebration and kind words about her from all the people she has touched over her 90 years.

Mrs. Greenlaw is the widow of Claude Greenlaw.

Women of the World picnic

Women of the World, an organization that welcomes international women to the Bangor area, will hold a picnic at noon Monday, July 26, at the University of Maine’s Littlefield Ornamental Gardens on Rangeley Road.

In case of rain, the picnic will be held at the Market Place in the UMaine Memorial Union. Those attending are asked to bring their own picnics.

At the picnic, plans will be made for meetings for the academic year beginning in September.

The group is open to American women as well as international women.
