John Bapst Memorial High School
BANGOR – Landis Green, head of school at John Bapst Memorial High School, has been serving on this summer’s faculty of the National Association of Independent School’s Leadership Institute.
The institute, an intensive four-day program run by the National Association of Independent Schools in Washington, is structured to provide emerging leaders in U.S. and international independent schools with an opportunity to explore and evaluate their abilities and goals with regard to school leadership.
As part of a four-person team – two consulting psychologists and two school leaders – Green and his colleagues are leading sessions in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver throughout the summer.
Green is on the faculty of the Philadelphia and Denver workshops, both of which include just under 50 participants.
The program, in its third year under the care of NAIS, uses a range of activities, from several objective, broadly normed instruments to reflective writing and observations of each other’s participation in case studies, to guide participants through the process of identifying and honing their leadership styles.
Additionally, those attending the program have gained feedback from their supervisors, peers and subordinates.
At the conclusion of the program, participants establish goals for their ongoing work at their respective schools and consider how their own leadership skills might best be used in schools throughout their career.
One of the critical goals of the workshop is encouraging ongoing professional development and self-reflection in those who are called to lead the nation’s independent schools in the coming decades. John Bapst Memorial High school is a coed, nondenominational, college-preparatory, independent high school in Bangor, ME.
The school serves 500 students in grades nine through 12.

CORINTH – Michael Julian, a senior at Central High School, was named a Samsung American Legion Scholarship national finalist. Julian was selected by the staff of Dirigo Boys State, held at Maine Maritime Academy June 20-25 in Castine.
Selection officials said Julian was named a national finalist on the basis of academics, school and community involvement and financial need.
As a finalist, Julian will join 99 other finalists from around the United States, each competing for one of seven scholarships worth an expected $20,000.
Julian, an athlete in three sports and the senior class president at Central High School, also participates in drama, math team, Ocean Bowl, peer mediators, Project Adventure and the school newspaper.
The Samsung American Legion Scholarship funds come from the earnings of a $5 million endowment given by Samsung. Samsung, in recognition of the sacrifice and commitment of U.S. service men and women who served during the Korean War to maintain the security of the Korean peninsula, joined with the American Legion to create an educational opportunity for the descendants of wartime veterans who served honorably.
Julian’s grandfather served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and the Gulf War.
A member of the Dirigo Boys State selection committee said the selection process was difficult. The applicants were some of the best-qualified students in the state and the competition was keen.
