STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – A team of some of the top girls basketball players in the state is 4-0 after two days of play at the Blue Chip Invitational, which is being held at Penn State.

The Maine Northstars won two games Wednesday and two games Thursday with two games left in pool play. Cony of Augusta star Katie Rollins leads the 10-player team with an average of 15 points per game.

The Northstars defeated the Reading (Pa.) Lady Stars 69-33 Wednesday thanks to 21 points from Messalonskee of Oakland’s Sarah Roderigue and 14 from Rollins. Maine beat the Massachusetts Warriors 63-40 Wednesday with Caribou’s Monica Selander scoring 15 points.

On Thursday the Northstars rolled over the Rhode Island Supersonics 75-26, paced by 15 points from Rollins and 11 each from Briiana Rende and Natalie Nimon of Cony and Valley of Bingham’s Kristin Baker. Rollins poured in 22 points as Maine topped the Syracuse (N.Y.) Lady Warriors 68-45.

Other team members are Maranacook of Readfield’s Toby Martin, Winslow’s Amanda Byrne, Cony’s Maggie Rende and Amanda Davis of Wiscasset. The team is coached by Bill Libby of Orono, who said the University of Maine women’s basketball coaching staff is attending the tournament.

There are 213 teams of high-school age players from all over the Northeast at the tournament.
