Orrington man to serve 1 year, repay $6,130 in roofing scam

BANGOR – An Orrington man who pleaded guilty to bilking thousands of dollars out of Penobscot County homeowners was sentenced Thursday in Penobscot County Superior Court to three years in prison with all but one year suspended.

Kriss P. Cloukey, 46, aka Kris Cloukey, also was sentenced to four years probation and ordered to pay $6,130 in restitution to 15 victims, most of them elderly, according to Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Greg Campbell.

Homeowners paid Cloukey amounts ranging from $100 to $1,100, Campbell said Thursday.

During the first three months of the year, Cloukey approached homeowners offering to repair their roofs or put on a metal roof, playing on their concerns about the structural integrity of their homes, Detective Bill Flagg of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department said in April when Cloukey was arrested.

Cloukey also offered discount prices, claiming to have materials left over after doing a roof-repair job in the area. The homeowners would give Cloukey a down payment for the work and materials, but in most cases, Cloukey would never return, according to the detective. On those occasions he did return, it was to ask for more money.

Law enforcement officials arrested Cloukey on April 2 when he went to a Hudson residence to get more money from the homeowner.

Campbell said Thursday that Cloukey had previous convictions for writing bad checks and theft by deception. In the past, said the prosecutor, Cloukey has paid restitution to his victims.
