‘Jacks open 2nd half with win in 10th

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bangor Lumberjacks started the second half of the Northeast League season with a 9-6 win over the New Haven County Cutters here Friday night thanks to a three-run 10th inning.

The win was the fourth straight for Bangor, which finished the first half 25-21 in the North Division. South Division runner-up New Haven was 25-22.

Brad Hargreaves’ bases-loaded RBI fielder’s choice, Donnie Ross’ RBI single, and a two-out balk by reliever Shane Waroff provided Bangor’s winning margin.

Lumberjacks’ left fielder Derry Hammond hit his league-leading 15th home run of the season in the fifth and added a single for two RBIs. Also leading the Lumberjacks were Donnie Ross, who had a double and two singles, and Kazuhiro Kohno, who hit his first home run of the season, singled, and stole a base. Third baseman Paul Powell drove in two runs.

Reliever John Boker picked up his first win of the season with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless and hitless relief while newly anointed closer Lance Calmus picked up his first save with a 1-2-3 10th inning.

Bangor starter Adam Thomas rode out a five-run second inning and lasted seven innings for the no-decision.
