While touring with a group of friends in Quebec on motorcycle recently, we learned with deep sorrow of another person killed in a motorcycle-moose accident in Grand Isle. I knew the man very well.

While riding, I noticed that in Quebec, where there is also a problem with moose, the shoulders of the highway are cleared of brush and vegetation approximately 75 to 100 feet on each side of the highway. Maine should have done the same thing a long time ago. It might not prevent all accidents involving moose, but it would reduce these accidents substantially.

Our representatives in Augusta might say they do not have the resources to maintain these problem areas, but it seems they have the resources to check and fine drivers for being an hour or two over on their log books. Moose have killed a lot more motorists in the past 10 years than tired truckers have.

Our leaders in Augusta need to rearrange their priorities.
