AUGUSTA – Maine’s unemployment rate in June was 4.1 percent, the same as it was in May but well below the national rate of 5.6 percent, the Baldacci administration said Monday.

Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman said the state’s unemployment rate has dropped by almost a full percentage point since last year, from 5 percent in June 2003. That translates into 6,100 fewer unemployed people, to a total of 28,500 in June 2004.

The unemployment rates are adjusted to account for seasonal fluctuations in the labor market.

Fortman said job gains have been recorded in the past year in health care and social assistance, retail trade, hospitality services as well as government and construction.
